Jake recently spoke with his folks on the telephone, but it was a brief conversation. The Colvin's were probably concerned about not receiving any letters or telegrams from Jake. With this letter he catches them up on information he sent in previous letters that have been delayed or lost in route. He also tells his Dad how proud he is of him.
Jake has learned that he will indeed be going to Europe, but is now a bit afraid of what the future may hold for him. This is the last correspondence in the scrapbooks that Jake sent from a U.S. address.
This letter was postmarked 29 December 1943.
From Grand Island, Neb.
Monday
Dearest Dad,
I should have written you last night, but there was this sweet little girl and my first night out. I hope you will forgive me.
We'll be going east as it stands now. To what exact point I can't say as I don't know but when Berlin falls I want to be there. Up to now I've really been eager to go, but when it comes down to it I'm really not. Maybe I'm scared and no doubt I'll be scared a lot more before I return.
As I told you I have my new airplane and it's wonderful. I have a lot to tell you about it when I get to see you again. I have had many thrills and a few close calls. As you said, the Lord looks after the ones who ask him and I've really put myself in his hands. Whatever happens from now on will be up to Him.
I can't figure why you didn't get any letters from me. I wrote you quite a few times from Pyote. Your present was mailed the 20th and should have been there for Xmas. Mother's package came as I wrote this and the gloves and scarf are really in use now and the pocket-book is always with me. Grandmother's package hasn't come yet and neither have the cards.
Congratulations on your acceptance as deacon. I'm more proud of you everyday. This is something I've always wanted for you and knew you deserved. May your presence there add as much as it does everywhere else.
Will you express my best wishes to all my friends, Ben, Mr. Bob Coleman, Dr. Mac and all the rest. Tell Dot hello for me too.
I hope we'll have plenty of time for hunting and fishing after this is all over and your rest has arrived after working so hard for so long. Give my love to all the folks and may we all be there together soon.
Your devoted son,
Jake Jr.
