High-skill visa reform needs action by Congress, Obama says
U.S. is making some changes to visa processes, but reform requires congressional help

October 11, 2011 07:37 PM ET

WASHINGTON -- President Obama's administration has been tweaking U.S. immigration policy and making small changes where it can to try to encourage the type of immigrant it wants.

But Obama on Tuesday said that real changes to high-skill immigration policy will require action from Congress.

"On the high-skill immigration area, that's not something that we can necessarily do on our own," Obama said at a meeting of the President's Council on Jobs and Competitiveness. "We can expedite some of the visas that are already in place and try to streamline that process to make it move faster," the president said, but "we may need some legislative help on that area."

The leading Democratic reform effort so far is by U.S. Rep. Zoe Lofgren (D-Calif.). Her bill would give a green card to any foreign student who graduates with an advanced degree in science, technology, engineering or math, but her bill is not getting Republican support. In the Senate, U.S. Sen. Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) has been promising an immigration reform bill, but he has yet to produce one.

1. and we have NO people here who can fill these jobs?
Bullshit.

Fix OUR job situation and make a law that American citizens are FIRST in line for the good jobs. Stop outsourcing and stop bringing in immigrants until all of our citizens are working.

4. Fuckin clueless
You cannot help the 99% by making that percentage a larger number. This move is spoon-feeding the 1%, again.

Stop shipping jobs offshore.
Tax company profits that utilize offshored resources to lower costs and increase profits on products and services.
Tariff all the Chinese shit coming off the boats.
End these bullshit trade agreements.
Make education affordable to US Citizens.
And most importantly, stop kissing the fortune 500 asses.

option #2...
Prepare yourself for not being re-elected.

option #3...
Hide! The 99% blames you...
They will not forgive, nor will they forget.

5. Here is my problem. Every time the Business Types meet
they appear to see the way to help UNEMPLOYED AMERICANS
is to bring in more H-1B visa participants from overseas.

I am having a hard time getting my head around the idea
that we have tens of millions unemployed in this country.
I have seen magazine type stories showing many of these
people are educated and held responsible positions until
their positions were closed down by the company. We have
young college graduates unable to find jobs.

Is there not some way for companies to do a patriotic
deed for once and take people in and give them on the
job training.

I simply refuse to believe that out of Millions there
are no Americans capable of learning these "Hi-Tech"
jobs.

I will accept that we encourage Foreign Students in College
here with Math Science Backgrounds to stay and Contribute
to the development of our country. This is a positive
thing.

I am not an isolationists but we must get our country
out of the ditch. The H-1B Visas have been used to
bring down the living standards in this country. Bring
in Hi-Tech workers at 3/4 to 1/2 the salary of an American
and soon everyone's living standards drop.

Ikt is time for us to find a way to connect Americans
with good jobs.
