Blast from the Past?
I ran across this quote while reading up on an unrelated topic: " The Roosevelt New Deal was no panacea but it was at least evidence of official concern, whereas the so-called National Government's policy of retrenchment was a defiant manifesto of indifference to widespread distress." (The quote is from Classicist Bernard Knox)

"Defiant manifesto of indifference to widespread distress." Hmmm. Sounds familiar.

1. The people who hold FDR up as an icon of progressive victory forget...
That for one, most of his attempted reforms failed. And those that did survive were constantly decried by the left as being weak and ineffectual.

Sounds VERY familiar.

2. I Was Thinking More Along the Line
... that the British National Government's policy and attitude rather resembled that of our Republican politicos.

3. Hmm, the most successful social program in the nation's history: Social Security.
Yeah, far from perfect; and much improved from FDR's original version. But a resounding success, nevertheless.

5. And at the time, it was blasted as being not nearly strong enough.
Even though passing it at all required a massive three to one Democratic super-majority in Congress.
