Why Bush has more to fear than fear itself
By LAWRENCE MARTIN Globe and Mail

"Mr. Bush's nation, which outspends the next closest military power by $300-billion annually, may be in danger, as he says it is. But the reason he is constantly handing the enemy psychological victories with his cowering terror alerts is more likely because of the danger he himself faces: losing the presidency.

History tells us that the last thing strong leaders do is send a signal that their side is frightened. Can anyone imagine a Churchill or Napoleon demonstrating this kind of fear over documents that spell out no plot but that -- O heavens! -- have been updated?

...how does a president project anything but weakness in having the world's greatest power tremble over evidence of file-updating by an enemy with a tiny fraction of his military capacity?

It's probably the response that Osama bin Laden and his network of savages would have desired...They can be pictured in their caves or Saudi palaces, feet up, chuckling. "What American city should we petrify with a leaked document today? Chicago? Miami? Or need we even bother? It's been three years since 9/11, and they're still paranoid. They're right where we want 'em -- in an eternal state of fear.

Having handed the enemy its first gift by attacking a country that had nothing to do with 9/11, Mr. Bush now bestows on them a second: victory on the battlefield of psychological warfare. The President's terror alerts, whatever their motivation, are enough to do it. Osama bin Laden is like David, slingshot at the ready, in the centre of the ring. His Goliath, George Bush, cowers in the corner, repeatedly sending out warnings to his people to run for cover.

1. This is what I've been saying from day one
the whole terror alert system is pointless.

If an attack happens it happens. What is the point of being afraid?

It's just letting the terrorists win without doing anything. Finally a journalist with the balls to print it.

2. Excellent! thanks for posting
The people who respond favorably to Bush are fear-based. I truly believe that. Which explains why they respond so viciously to anyone questioning their 'protector'. Even benign milk toast questions cause a fury. Sad.

3. It's interesting they mention Churchill in the article
The difference between Churchill and Bush in time of war is stark. Churchill was totally focussed on defeating Hitler - no lounging about Chartwell 42% of the time, no employment of spinmeisters, no interminable campaigning bus tours, no £500 a plate fundraisers, no "energising his base" etc etc.

Of course, to thank him for his efforts on their behalf the British people voted Churchill out of office in 1945. Bush will do anything to retain office, including losing the war on terror (and he is losing it).

However, Churchill remains today commonly viewed as the greatest statesmen in British history, and one of the greatest wartime leaders in history. Bush conversely will go down as the poorest post-war US president.
