Families of means are able to provide their children what cash-strapped systems have taken away. They can afford to give their kids the private music lessons that public schools have cut. They can afford private instruction in art, or dance, or sports to replace what the district doesn't offer. Or, they can abandon public schools altogether and write the check for a private education.
Families who don't have the money are stuck with the state's idea of a well-rounded, good education: FCAT proficiency.
You won't see students from poor or even middle-class families rushing off to clarinet or ballet lessons after school. You won't see them practicing their golf game or working in watercolors. We offer them a very different childhood.
