The people have overwhelmingly decided that George Bush is a failure. He has failed us in the War on Terror. He failed to develop a plan for Iraq. He failed us on the economy. The American people, in poll after poll, have told us that the country is heading in the wrong direction, and is in desperate need of a change in leadership. Yet George W. Bush will be re-elected President. Not because people believe he deserves it. He will win based entirely on the fact that Bush, through his entourage of cronies, is willing to lie to your faces.
In the Democratic primaries, John Kerry’s war record was one of his major appeals. They faced a President who questioned their patriotism despite the fact that a good many of them put politics aside and wrote this President a blank check to pursue a war in Iraq in a time of national tragedy. Now the Democrats salivated at the chance to contrast the accomplishments of a genuine war hero with a man who used family connections to get in the National Guard so he didn’t have to serve in a war he believed in – and then didn’t bother show up for two months.
The Democrats chose a man who they knew had unquestionably answered the call of duty when the current President had not. An argument could be made that how one behaved during the Vietnam War should not be the determining factor in this election, but at the very least their candidate – who’s patriotism would undoubtedly be questioned by this administration if he dared to question his foreign policy disaster in the Middle East – would have pulled one of his comrades out of the drink under enemy fire.
If you’re Bush, how do you answer this? He could say the kind of men they were 35 years ago shouldn’t matter. He could say his leadership on 9/11 shows the kind of man he is now. But instead he did what Bush always does when the facts don’t immediately benefit him: he lied, through his Texas financiers, family buddies and sycophant talk show hosts. And it’s working. Kerry’s support is slipping among Veterans. Independents find the ads put out by the Swift Boat Veterans for Lies believable. Bush is gaining ground in swing states where the ads are running.
Never mind that these charges are a big mound of heaping horsesh*t.
