America's next war?: Patrick J. Buchanan
Patrick J. Buchanan

America's next war?

Lately, an effort by Russia, France and Germany to have Iran open up its nuclear plants to inspection has been rebuffed by Tehran. Having seen how America dealt summarily with Iraq, but proceeds gingerly with North Korea, Tehran has likely concluded that when a superpower is threatening pre-emptive strikes and preventive war, only nuclear weapons can deter it. Those who do not have such deterrents get the Saddam and Taliban treatment.

Enter the "cakewalk" neoconservatives. Though disastrously wrong about Iraq's receptivity to U.S.-imposed democracy, and though they face disgrace and oblivion if Bush loses, they have one last card to play: That is to have America widen her wars with Afghanistan and Iraq with a pre-emptive strike on Iran's nuclear facilities. For the neoconservatives, Iraq was simply Phase II of "World War IV" for imperial domination of the Middle East and serial destruction of the regimes in Iraq, Syria, Iran and Saudi Arabia, as well as of Hezbollah, Hamas and the Palestinian Authority.

The neocons have not abandoned this imperial project. Nor has Bush removed a single one from power, though they may yet cost him his presidency. And the neoconservative commentariat is again beating the drums for war – this time on Iran.

And, in truth, Iran is a matter the president and Pentagon must address. Can we live with an Iranian atom bomb, which will restrict U.S. freedom of action in the Gulf and likely lead to proliferation of nuclear weapons in the Arab world? Or is Iran the place where the Bush Doctrine must be applied, even if it ultimately requires U.S. air and missile strikes on Iran's nuclear sites?

Presently, America and her European allies appear to be moving toward Security Council sanctions if Iran does not render hard assurances it is not going nuclear. But if the mullahs have concluded their only defense against U.S. or Israeli pre-emptive strikes is a deterrent of their own – a not unreasonable assumption given what happened next door – we are headed for a showdown that will change our world forever.

2. We are invading Pat Buchanan?
How do I enlist?

Of course Iran can't be allowed to delelop a nuclear weapon. But invade them over it? Never. These nations will always see the US with thousands of nukes and wonder, who the hell are they to preach? I'm afraid this is a problem that can't be addressed. That is why diplomacy has to be used to get other countries to see why they don't need nukes. This idea of bombing them is absurd and frankly will create a world problem that the US may not be able to escape. We may appear invincible, but history shows the most powerful have always fallen.

5. If Bush loses the election, I see him starting a war with Iran just to

6. Buchanan forgot the most obvious reason
They may "say" that we're invading Iran because they have nukes, but they also have the second biggest reserve of natural gas on the planet. Russia has the most. Iran also has almost as much oil as Iraq.

7. Missles
I may be incorrect but doesn't Iran have missles that could destroy Israel's nuke site?

14. Israel has a national missile defense shield
As the only nation on earth (until the US makes a working version) Israel has a national missile defense shield, called the "arrow", as it's missile component is also called, control units are called "yellow citron" and the radar "green pine" (where do they come up with these names?)

A link that explains it:

11. Israeli forces in Kurdish Iraq
I remember reading about this some time back. I wonder how much the Iraqi street knows about this situation. It just reinforces a view they may have that the 'Zionists' control American policy. While Israel has struck at Iraq before with airstrikes there was probably not a strong presence on the ground. The fact that there are Israeli special forces on the ground in Iraq seems like it would be the kind of thing that the United States would want to keep very quiet to avoid further inflaming the Arab majority in Iraq.

I dread the reaction to an Israeli strike on Iranian nuclear facilities if that strike originated in coalition controlled Iraq. The possibility of open Iranian involvement in Iraq would be devastating to any hope of getting out of Iraq in a short amount of time, no matter who is president.

I do find it interesting that this message is coming from Buchanan. How tenuous a grasp on power does the current administration have? What will they do if they face the prospect of losing that power?

12. America's Next War MUST Be Against the NEOCONS
We must rip out the fascism at home before we have no home to defend. There is no outside enemy that is 1/10th as bad as the traitors within. Ignore this danger at your peril.
