NEW YORK -- President Bush vigorously defended his leadership in the war against global terrorism and his stewardship of the economy as he asked Americans on Thursday to send him back to the White House for a second term to protect the nation from its new enemies.
As he formally accepted the party's nomination, the president sharply derided rival Sen. John Kerry as an indecisive, spendthrift Democrat who has the wrong vision to lead the nation at a historic moment. Bush urged voters to consider how he led the country through the turmoil of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks and use it as a guide for how he would move the country forward.
"Generations will know if we seized this moment and used it to build a future of safety and peace. The freedom of many and the future security of our nation now depend on us," Bush said. "My fellow Americans, I ask you to stand with me."
On the final evening of the Republican convention, the president made a dramatic entrance onto the convention floor in Madison Square Garden. He walked through doors decorated in flags and delivered a prime-time address from a round stage awash in red, white and blue and adorned by the presidential seal.
"I wake up every morning thinking about how to better protect our country. I will never relent in defending America, whatever it takes," Bush said. "We have fought the terrorists across the Earth not for pride, not for power, but because the lives of our citizens are at stake."<snip>
