ALBERT M. FORGET
GUEST COLUMNIST
I served on active duty in the Navy (1952-1982) and am no hero -- though for 30 years I was willing to give my life for our Constitution and still would.
Serving in Vietnam as a petty officer first class from 1963 to 1965, I "celebrated" my 30th and 31st birthdays during that tour. Later while serving as a chief petty officer, I made three deployments on gunfire support and other missions in connection with "Market Time" operations.
It is from that experienced background, I denounce the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth ads.
Unlike those veterans, I cannot comment on the service of other men and women absent having served directly with them. When they question awards and decorations presented to others, all vetted up the chain of command, they seem to intimate the most senior commanders colluded to recognize John Kerry for actions that never happened.
Those who were there (members of the crews who served directly with Kerry) know the truth. Those who have studied the after-action reports (to determine ways in which to make future operations better) know the truth.
