Paul Krugman - Hatred In Madison Square Garden
http://www.mercurynews.com/mld/mercurynews/news/opinion/9600352.htm

``I don't know where George Soros gets his money,'' one man said. ``I don't know where -- if it comes from overseas or from drug groups or where it comes from.'' George Soros, another declared, ``wants to spend $75 million defeating George W. Bush because Soros wants to legalize heroin.'' After all, a third said, Soros ``is a self-admitted atheist; he was a Jew who figured out a way to survive the Holocaust.''

They aren't LaRouchies -- they're Republicans.

<snip>

But the vitriol also reflects the fact that many of the people at that convention, for all their flag-waving, hate America. They want a controlled, monolithic society; they fear and loathe our nation's freedom, diversity and complexity.

1. Damn Bush, what have you done to this country?
You have friggin tore this country apart with your hate filled statements such as "You are with us or against us". It used to be civil political parties running on their issues. Now it is hate filled comments, smears against opponents, lies, hate filled speeches, neighbors tearing down campaign signs, ugly Americans slamming veterans with purple heart bandages, and attempts to defame anyone who opposes your views. God Damn you for what you have done.

3. "...he was a Jew who figured out a way to survive the Holocaust.''
George Soros was 10 years old in 1940. So a 10-year-old surviving the Nazi genocide is somehow a character flaw? And these are the "adults" in charge?

4. Yet another example of how the Republican rank and file
parrot the talking points provided for them. Hastert and company know this all too well. This is what we're up against, folks.

5. This is actually fairly typical.
If one looks at the 'group think' that is the basic underlying tenet of this bunch, one finds, very consistently, they will always accuse the opponent of what they, themselves are guilty of. That's the ruling idea behind Rove's attacking strength. If you want to know what they are hiding, look at what they attack.
I'm sure there's some psychological term for this.

6. "Projection" comes to mind.
Like when a straying lover accuses the other of fooling around. When a company exec is looting the company and its employees, and accuses the unions and (emasculated) government regulators of running the company to ruin. When state legislators increase demands made upon public schools, cut funds for public education (or refuse to supply funds the feds have cut) and then accusing the public education system of not meeting demands.

When a bunch a chickenhawks impugn the military records of those who actually went, were there, and SERVED their country, instead of deciding that their country should only serve them.
