Why Americans love George W Bush (they are unattractive and stupid)

http://www.atimes.com/atimes/Front_Page/FI14Aa01.html

George W Bush almost certainly will win another term as president of the United States, as I have predicted all along (Careful what you Bush for, August 3). That surprises outside observers of US politics, who can see that the Democrats are cleverer, better dressed and better looking. It is just the sort of Americans who know they are neither clever nor good-looking who will vote for Bush.

-snip-

Bush voters really do look worse (obesity is an inland disease in the US), dress worse, and are less likely to have attended a university than Kerry voters. But Bush voters are the sort of people who believe in their heart of hearts that America was founded to protect the likes of them - unlikely the clever and attractive people who can fend quite well for themselves. That is the source of their patriotism.

-snip-

The United States, by contrast, is populated by the descendants of individuals who decided to cease to be Europeans (or whatever) so that no one would be able to push them around. That is why Americans own guns. By some accounts the number of guns in circulation exceeds the number of Americans. Americans do not use their guns, contrary to popular myth. If the violent behavior of certain minority groups is excluded, Americans commit the same proportion of violent crimes as do Europeans. But an armed population will accept only so much abuse. Gun control, by the same token, is a liberal obsession (the Drudge Report observed that Kerry sponsored legislation that would have banned the make of shotgun that he accepted as a gift from trade-union supporters in Pennsylvania).

-snip-

As for the other countries of the world, it is an inconvenience that George W Bush will pursue the "war on terror" to its bitter end, namely civilization war. It doesn't matter. They don't vote. My advice: suck it up and prepare for the second Bush administration.

2. great article
this article explains for me, at least in part, why people would support the banal, evil puppet. It made me pretty desperate, but at least it answers some questions for me.

3. wow - way to make sweeping, insulting generalizations!
As someone who was born and raised in the proudly blue St. Louis, Missouri, I think you may need to take a closer look at the problem. You make some good points about why particular individuals who vote for Bush do so, but these are drowned in the way you broad-brush "inland" America red and have done with it. This is an urban vs. rural problem far more than it is an inland vs. coastal problem. The electoral college might mask that on the surface, but you'll find ardent Bushies of the "the 2nd amendment makes all the others possible" variety in upstate New York just as much as you'll find them in the rural parts of Missouri (I know, I got my undergrad there).

4. Asinine Article

How many people on this forum do not live in a coastal state?

How do you explain the coastal state of Hew Hampshire going for Bush in the last election?

How many people who vote Democratic are obese?

What about the Californians who recently elected a Bush minion as their governor?

What about New York City, home of Ann Coulter and home base of Fox News, which elected a Bush minion as its mayor?

And, how do you explain Ann Coulter? She is certainly not fat, has a degree from an elite university, and, until you get to know her, is reasonably attractive.

I lived in New York City for several years. During that time almost every East Coast native that I encountered, upon learning that I was working on a Masters Degree in Near Eastern Studies, responded with stereotypes of Arabs and Iranians that would shame the Nazi propaganda machine. I encountered far more genuine curiosity and open minded attitudes from the ostensibly fat and ignorant residents of the Inland States than I did from the pseudo-sophisticated passport holding bigots of the East Coast.

Do you know that the inland states of Illinois, Iowa, Minnesota, Michigan and Wisconsin went for Gore in the last presidential election?

Why aren't British Labor party voters who placed Il Duce II in 10 Downing Street stereotyped in the same way as Bush voters?

Norway, Denmark, Italy, the Netherlands? All part of the coalition of the willing.

I have a Masters Degree from an elite University, speak passable French and Arabic, am 6'0 and 155 lbs, have a passport, have traveled abroad including extended stays in places where the coastal elite does not go and live in an inland state. Explain this please.

Please explain to me why the citizens of the world who flock to see Arnold Schwarzenegger's Republican Party propaganda films are not stereotyped in the same way as Bush voters?

If I wanted to really destroy Kerry's chances of winning this is exactly the sort of propaganda I would spread. Insult potential voters by deriding their intelligence, sophistication and physical appearance. I expect a lot of people in the Kerry campaign, and perhaps Kerry himself, think the the same ignorant, snobbish thoughts as the author of this article. Bush is bad enough that I will be voting for Kerry. Hell, I'd vote for Hitler and Stalin over Bush and Cheney. Better the real thing than a bad copy. However, in light of the pig vomit like this that is being circulated by Kerry supporters, I can't say that he doesn't deserve the trouncing he will get in November.

6. I Know That
I am well aware that this opinion comes from outside the United States. The author is an ignorant bigot with very shallow knowledge of the United States. I'd laugh this stupidity except that it is being circulated and applauded by Kerry supporters. If I were Rove I'd make sure that copies of this article got into the hands of every undecided voter in the country.

10. You Miss My Point
My point is not what this author is saying. Just as Americans have ignorant stereotypes about the rest of the world so do others have ignorant stereotypes about us. This article when taken by itself is actually very comical.

What is wrong here is that some have chosen to stroke their own egos by applauding the writer's uninformed, and perhaps uninformable, opinions. Sometimes people on this forum forget that while places like Texas gave us George W. Bush places like Texas also gave us Willie Nelson, Molly Ivans, Ann Richards and the Dixie Chicks. This exactly the sort of thing that Karl Rove and company love.

The Democratic Party likes to think of itself as an organization for the common man. Well, in this country the common man, owing to poverty, is obese. No, the common man does not have a passport. Why have one when Disney World is a once in a life time experience and London totally unfordable? To wage a successful campaign the Democrats must convince the majority of voters that it is in their best interests to vote Democratic, not insult them and thus drive them toward the Republicans who are waiting to welcome them with open arms if not open hearts.
