SAD ANNIVERSARY

It was just 65 years ago - September, 1939 - that Adolph Hitler invaded Poland, and that invasion led France and England to go to war against Germany and eventually to World War II.

It wasn't until September, 1944 - five years later - that Allied forces were recapturing parts of Europe, and France and Belgium were liberated. Should we have given up and gone home because the fighting was long, hard and heartbreaking?

That tragic war has been over now for over half a century, but some of the scars still remain, many of them in Germany.

The wonderful part is that peoples who were enemies have become friends. Our leaders have differences of opinion sometimes, but nothing so basic as the difference between totalitarianism and freedom. Nations that were our enemies in the war torn years are now part of a free world that would like nothing better than to see a millennium of freedom, peace and prosperity for everyone on this planet.

Unfortunately, there are some zealots who don't seem to share that dream. Referring of course to the Muslim terrorists who use hideous means to try to force the free world to cower.

Hasn't worked so far. Certainly hope it doesn't. Much as we love peace, some things are worth fighting for.

Unfortunately, some of our national figures - and news commentators - are trying to resurrect the ugliness that was Viet Nam and transfer it to Iraq. They want us to forget September 11 and the Twin Towers and the attack on the Pentagon. National unity is bad for them politically. They'd like nothing better than to divide this land again, erode our determination to wipe out terrorism, and then give in to the bad guys and bring our armies home. The scary part is they could succeed. People are starting to believe them.

They seriously suggest it would be a good thing to pack up and go home because the Muslim extremists don't want us there and keep proving it by staging torture executions on international television. Sure. Great idea! Giving in to the school yard bully always worked too, didn't it?

Unbelievable! they're still beating that stupid "Iraq was responsible for 9/11" thing and people are buying it! If I had the time, I'd create one comparing this Administration to Hitler's Germany, But right now, I've got too much to do. This is one of the reasons why I'm glad that I left this freeper infested podunk shithole of a town.

8. Hardcore Fundie and Catholic is an oxymoron..
I'm Catholic, and the Catholic church was the only religion that took a stand against the Iraq war.

3. My reply to the Pestigo Times
Not that it will do any good:

The author writes:

"Unfortunately, some of our national figures - and news commentators -

to Iraq. They want us to forget September 11 and the Twin Towers and
the attack on the Pentagon."

I think some fact checking is in order. Those who remember correctly
remember that on September 11, 2001, we were attacked by Osama bin
Laden and al Qaeda. The country was united and we effectively drove
the terrorists from Afghanistan along with the despotic Taliban
regime. We had the world on our side.

Then the White House chose to turn its attention to Iraq, a country
that had nothing to do with 9/11. Both the 9/11 Commission and the
president himself have admitted that there is no connection between
Saddam and the 9/11 attacks. Yet this president rushed to war, spurned
the very allies we fought for in World War II, inflamed moderate
Muslims and created a chaotic situation that breeds more terrorists.

Please stop relating 9/11 and the war in Iraq. They are two separate,
unrelated events save for the the fact that the current administration
used the tragedy of 9/11 to justify its misguided, pre-emptive war
against Iraq.

7. Hell, I already sent it, but feel free to paraphrase.
I don't live anywhere near Peshtigo, so they'll think I'm some "crazy liberal" from Madison.

5. He ignores one small fact ...
The US was loathe to get involved in the European war. The war started in 1939. We didn't join until Germany declared war on us in December 1941. Prior to joining the war, America was strongly isolationist. Not even the pleading of Britain got us to join. Kinda the opposite situation of Iraq.
