My first post! And I must pass this along about Bush...
just came from serving dinner at a local homeless shelter, and before the clients came in, the staff and volunteers took a short break. One man who was formerly homeless and is now on staff and working his way through school brought up the SOTU and Bush.

Well, the floodgates opened, and to make a long story short, the consensus is...W. sucks! I had been getting depressed that no one is paying attention and that you-know-who enjoys overwhelming support. Well, I'm starting to change that opinion and urge everyone to hang in there- we have more support out there than we think. Oh yeah- the people also aren't buying the religiousness of W.- "fake Christian" was what I heard.
 to Shrub!

6. YAY! Welcome to DU, kckc. An impressive debut, and
a damn sight better than the SOTU reaction I heard today. Of course, it was from an antiques dealer who'd just sold some stuff to Goldie Hawn and Kate Hudson. So, consider the source. He had favorable things to say about bush's marriage crap - doesn't like gays. But he also said he was aghast at the proposal to let so many people out of prison into those halfway-house programs bush proposed last night. He was simply horrified about that - again, because every last one of them presumably learned to be gay in prison, according to this guy anyway.

Things break down slowly, I guess. But it is WUNNNNNderful to hear your story. Let's hope that sentiment there is contagious!

8. Take voter registration forms to the shelter!
the key thing is for people to register to vote...and the poor normally aren't well represented at the polls...

11. Absolutely. And Welcome to DU, kckc.
Does anyone really think that the 50%+ of Americans who don't vote are Republicans?

10. Make a point of seeing to it that these people VOTE!
All to often homeless people feel their voices don't count.....and they do. The only problem I can see is providing proof of residence. You might consider discussing this problem with the local Democratic Party headquarters. In my opinion this would be a step toward insuring these people feel they are still part of something and have some say in what becomes of them.
