MPs join Khorafi call on detainees


KUWAIT CITY : A number of MPs Wednesday lauded Speaker Jassem Al-Khorafi's call to the United States to release 12 Kuwaitis detained at Camp "X-ray" in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. They demanded the immediate closure of the detention camp, saying the continuous confinement of the detainees without trial is a flagrant violation of human rights.

Al-Khorafi Tuesday slammed the US for holding the 12 Kuwaitis without trial. He said their continued detention is against all values of human rights. The families of the 12 detainees will Saturday meet Al-Khorafi to thank him for his effort to end the ordeal of their children. Sources told the Arab Times Al-Khorafi was pleased with the outcome of his calls to the US to release the detainees. They added the Speaker is optimistic the issue will soon be solved.

Al-Khorafi will send letters to the Arab, Asian and international parliament unions to call on them to adopt serious action and unify their position on this humanitarian issue. The sources said Al-Khorafi has already received positive reactions from some parliaments and national councils in the region. Al-Khorafi Wednesday received MP Abdullah Akash who has been selected by the parliamentary Human Rights Panel to be in charge of the issue. Akash exchanged with Al-Khorafi views on future plans and the mechanism required to tackle the issue.
