I got a nasty letter from my congressman. (Pete King R-NY CD 3)
Edited on Mon Mar-15-04 09:37 PM by Bleachers7
I had called as part of the Move-on censure Bush campaign. This is what I got back.

Dear Mr. Bleachers7,

I understand that you recently contacted my office requesting that I vote to censure President Bush.

I disagree with you in every respect. You are morally, intellectually and politically wrong. President Bush is an outstanding leader of outstanding integrity. Like Ed Koch I thank God every night that he is our President. You should do the same.

Very truly yours, Pete T King

_______
Pete, you're a loser.

Cheers.

Send him a letter a week and spell out your criticisms. Keep it up to date. Use the top ten list if you need. And encourage others. And above all keep your letters clean. Then keep his letters. Next time he comes up for election offer them to the opposing candidate. Just a thought.

25. That's correct
When I was living out in Central PA, the Congressman was a total reactionary Repub in a safe reactionary Repub district (they didn't even run a Dem against him when I was there). He at least had the courtesy to locate a point we could both agree on in my letters and emails, and detail his work on that, while avoiding discussing the other stuff.

The letter King sent is truly unbelievable - but perhaps a bit more honest. The original poster should continue to send King his or her own honest assessment of King's performance, and perhaps put that letter up like flyers all over the neighborhood (with identifying information whited out, of course).

As we say in Brooklyn: Whatta SKOOTCH!

it was in reply to a National Abortion Rights League email about roe v. wade. It was a couple of yrs. ago.

He stated that abortion was wrong and he would fight to stop it at every turn, yada, yada, yada. He's no longer in office as I am sure you all know. We now have a new loser who is just as bad.

22. What's with the personal attack?
Edited on Mon Mar-15-04 09:52 PM by LeahMira
You are morally, intellectually and politically wrong.

You didn't expect him to agree with you, did you? But still, you didn't expect a personal attack!

There are plenty of vaguely pleasant ways to have said that Mr. King had no intention of doing as you suggested. He could have said that while he understands some of your concerns, he does not at this time believe that censure is the proper course, yadda, yadda, yadda ...

To be fair, I didn't see your note to him, but having no reason to assume that it was not politely and reasonably structured, there is absolutely NO EXCUSE for a personal attack such as this. Telling you what you should do is overstepping this man's prerogatives.

Send it to the newspaper, make a few copies and leave them in your local library, and let the rest of this person's constituents see what a heavy-handed little dictator he tries to be. And please work your little tail off to see that this individual is out of public office pronto.

Sorry this happened to you. Pete is indeed a loser.

Whether Green, Dem or whatever, send them a copy of the letter, too. As long as the House and Senate are GOP controlled, shrub and crew will get away with all of this crap they've done.

69. A politician would never talk like that to a constituent
That must be from a staffer.

Here's an idea...get your local news station or newspaper to do a short story on the letter. You can be shown as the concerned citizen who was expressing your opinion to your representative, and you got back this nasty letter telling you that you were immoral and an idiot. If you can, cry a little on camera.

Then, within two days, it will be on the Today show and King will have to issue an apology.

74. This actually is quite frightening
Congressmen/women always have some bland response thanking you for contacting them and outlining their position, blah, blah because they are looking at your as a potential voter so they want to handle you with kid gloves. This kind of stuff is basically declaring war on fellow citizens and telling you that you are an inferior person. Morally wrong can easily become: "we have to rid our nation of these scum who are polluting our morals". These people really are dangerous Nazis.

79. Oh to have a congressmen like yours!
Edited on Tue Mar-16-04 12:34 PM by suegeo
As bad as his response was, at least he addresses the issues you raised. Which indicates a certain amount of sanity and contact with reality.

On the other hand, communication with my congressman is like the dialog in the play "Waiting for Godot."

For example, I phoned my congressmen after the state of the union to express my concerns about just how dangerous Mr. Bush sounded to me (that is, Mr. Bush wants to make the patriot act permanent, wants to insert discrinimation into the constitution re: the gays, and wants to outright kill suspected terrorists instead of catching them, charging them, and giving them a trial.)

So today, I get a response letter from my congressman, and he thanks me for contacting him about the tax cuts. Huh? I never contacted him about the tax cuts.

I don’t know what’s worse: getting a condescending letter like yours, or getting a letter than indicates that my congressman is either a incompetent moron or simply out of touch with reality. Like he hears my complaints, and robot that he is, he grunts back with: “Tax cut good.”

ON EDIT: My congressman is Jim Ramstad in Minnesota. Hate radio tries to paint him as RINO, but trust me, he's as filthy a republican as they come (well, ok, he's no Tom DeLay.)

85. Here's my letter to King:
Edited on Tue Mar-16-04 01:26 PM by rucky
Subject: Every night I thank God you're not my representative.

Writing you from Oregon. Seems that word is getting around about how you treat your constituents.

http://www.counterbias.com/news002.html

Bad move, Pete. You're morally wrong to personally attack a consituent, politically wrong to do it publicly, and intellectually wrong to defend Bush.

Sincerely,

rucky

86. Constiuent Communication
Some years ago I wrote a piece of software for use in congressional offices to manage contituent contact. Part of the software was storage for the member's 'issue book' and easy access to it for all staffers. As I recall, the issue book was a pretty standard feature in most offices before computerization; back when it was actually a book.

Staff keeps track of incoming contact and makes note of new issues being raised. Once an issue had established itself as more than a one time event it is bucked to the member and senior staff for discussion and drafting of the member's standard response on that subject. Subsequently, staffers would use the contents of the issue book to respond to constituent inquiries.

In the offices I interviewed (all on the Democrat side of the aisle) this was a standard approach and I believe that it was pretty common throughtout the House and Senate.

So, I would be pretty certain that this is NOT some renegade staffer, that there was discussion on how to reply and that the reply sent was EXACTLY what Pete meant.

Sic'em.

but repulsed by his dickheadedness.

but look at the bright side, it's not everyday you get personally belittled by a high-ranking public official. you should get the letter framed and tell all your buddies the story about how you attempted to "stick it to the man" and got a shitty letter out of it.

Let's start our own little DU donation drive. We can track how much we donate to the Democrat. Maybe Dean can target this buffoon for defeat. He looks vulnerable, being in a Gore district. You should send a copy of this letter to your local Democratic organization.
