4. Clarke saying
not many people knew what happened on 911, no good account of why we failed to stop the attack.

The answers weren't getting out, he needed to get it off my chest.

I apologized because we failed them, we didn't protect them, we need to ask for forgiveness.

14. Clarke saying also
that the WH is trotting out stuff to undermine my credibility, it's sort of ironic, they have the credibility problem, they are trying to divert attention from the problem.

LK: why did you praise them in Aug?

Clarke: I didn't praise them, they leaked my comments despite WH policy against leaking, they asked me to help them out re: Time mag article. I agreed to state good things they had done, because I was trying to stay on and change gov from inside.

If I had criticized the Pres to the press at the time, I'd have been fired immediately. Condi Rice asked me to do the briefing, and to spin it in a positive way.

They are scrambling very hard at WH to refute and besmirch me. I knew they would let loose the dogs, as they did to Paul ONeill, instead of talking about their failures.

LK: Was 911 preventable?

RC: I don't know, we'll never know. Clinton had daily meetings, this admin did not. If they had, what would they have shaken loose? I believe we would have caught the terrorists.

15. there's the answer to the 2002 piece
As a special assistant to the president, I was instructed to present the admin case in the best possible light. If I complained about the administration, I would have been fired in an hour. They know that. And now they're using that against me.

(I paraphrase, but that's the gist)

114. Too late. He spilled the beans on national television. And, the book.
I'm not saying he still shouldn't be really REALLY careful, but seriously: he's done his damage. If something were to happen to him now, he'd be a frigging martyr. His book sales would go out of sight. And, I think, there'd be more whistle-blowers about *that*, and *that* would be very VERY bad. No, I think they'll just do their damndest to discredit him, and if that doesn't work--Oooh look! Shiny thing!

If they *do* have Bin Laden on ice, now's the time for them to produce him. It's the only way they can save any face at all from this mess.

Sandy Berger, FBI, CIA et al were on the ball, shaking the info out and alerting their people.
Compared it to pre-9/11, when the FBI knew that 2 of the hijackers had entered the U. S. and nobody in power got the info because Condi not on the ball.

And I swear if JOE BIDEN makes more of his snarky remarks...I've really had it with him.

61. Parse the subtext: They KNEW! They did not "know" EXACTLY where and when
Edited on Wed Mar-24-04 09:40 PM by seventhson
They ALWAYS qualify it like this:

NO ONE EVER TOLD US that someone would fly four hijacked jets into 3 targets in NYC and Washington DC at precisely 8:45. 9:10 and 9:35 a.m. on September 11th, 2001 using Muslims who had been out at a strip club only days before whose middle names were Abdullah and who had cousins married to a handful of Yemenis who used to live in Toledo....

They say they did not know EXACTLY that it would happen and how.

They have STOPPED saying they had no idea it could happen (altho condi said it and even stupid ass rummy said that yesterday)

MY POINT IS...

The WAY they say they did not know is a Bullshit lie. They say it in a way that makes it sound technically true but you KNOW it is just BS

41. Back to the program.
W was told on regular basis that al quaida attack was coming, but did not feel a sense of urgency. The pres has diminished our ability to fight the war on terrorism, due to war in Iraq: we are too vulnerable here at home, still unprotected, we've inflamed the Islamic world, took troops and intelligence assets away from hunt for OBL. We'll catch him soon, but won 't matter because al Q has morphed into a hydra.

Condi saying that RC is upset because he didn't get the job of Homeland Sec. Dir . RC saying that W and Ridge didn't want Dept. of Homeland Sec until they found out the Lieberman was sponsoring the bill, then they turned around and claimed it as their own.

RC - the problems started with Clinton, I criticised him as well. Bill C should have bombed the camps more, butg public said wag the dog, so he didn't do it again. He should have kept doing it. I criticized BC for it.

BC obsessed with getting OBL, ordered him assassinated, the CIA failed to do this, then said the orders to assassinate OBL were ambivalent.

No one is actually lying, they are too smart for that, just creative memory or interpretation of emphasis. Thanks family members who caused this commision to come into existence, and keep it going.
