I made a wee bit of difference in the Clarke story. *GRIN*
I got the New Your Times and Washington Post to correct some errors in their Clarke testimony transcripts! COOL!

It's not a big thing, but when you're disabled and for the most stuck at home, it gets hard to feel like you matter, sometimes, if you know what I mean.

Anyway... here's what both paper had in their transcripts and the e-mail I sent off to both papers.

"...THOMPSON: Well, what it suggests to me is that there is one standard of candor and morality for White House special assistants and another standard of candor and morality for the rest of America.

THOMPSON: I don't think it's a question of morality at all. I think it's a question of politics.

CLARKE: Well, I...

(APPLAUSE)

THOMPSON: I'm not a Washington insider. I've never been a special assistant in the White House. I'm from the Midwest. So I think I'll leave it there...."
------------------------

That's a terrible error. Clarke is the person who said "I think it's a question of politics."

Sounds like you have someone in your transcript service that doesn't like anyone but Republicans getting applause. It's a blatent error that reeks of political bias. Errors like that aren't accidents.

Get it fixed. NOW.

-----------------------------

Well, I sent them off using an e-mail account I don't use a whole lot. I just checked that mail and found these in my box...

Mike Getler, our ombudsman, forwarded your note about the error in the transcript of Mr. Clarke's testimony. The attribution error was made by the transcription service used by us and other media organizations and was obviously overlooked by us in editing the text for the Web. It's been fixed now, thanks to alert readers like yourself, and a correction will also be added to that page noting that the error has been corrected.

Many thanks
for your note. -- Mark Stencel

One of his best answers, and one the audience (and apparently the Daily Show) loved.

edit: And next time, double check your spelling of 'blatant'--:D

Maybe they just want to be extra careful with Clarke's testimony because everyone will be reading it.

16. Me too.... Maybe?
There may have been some others who emailed Fox News about their blatant misrepresentation of clarke. They included an exchange that consisted of a bash at clarke from a republican, followed by a response from clarke to a different question by a different person... I sent a letter, and I just looked back and they have edited the story. Unlike a respectable news organization, however, they didn't even send a brief note saying "we'll look into it" or "we fixed that".

The letter I wrote:

To: politics@foxnews.com
Subject: Your inaccuracies are astonishing... and ironic.

I know you're doing your best to spin the news in your "fair and balanced (TM)" way, and the White House wants you to spin this story for them. You've already violated journalistic confidences at the request of the White House. But, misrepresenting the transcript of the 9/11 hearings is truly outrageous.

You included this passage in your article http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,115045,00.html

"You've got a real credibility problem," John Lehman, former Navy secretary under President Reagan, told Clarke, calling the witness "an active partisan selling a book."

Clarke responded: "I don't think it's a question of morality at all, I think it's a question of politics."

This is a blatant misrepresentation. Clarke's reply was to a different question, asked by Senator Thompson. If you were a reputable news organization, I would suggest you run a retraction.

--Sparky McGruff, Ph.D.

Upon checking today, they removed the rebuttal from Clarke, which seemed like a complete non-sequitur as a response. Now it looks like the straight up hit job that it is.

Edited on Sun Mar-28-04 02:31 AM by Woodstock
I knew they were slime, but thought they were trying a little harder than that to at least PRETEND to be credible. This turns it into Clarke acting "partisan" whereas he was really telling it like it is (and getting applause from families of 9/11 victims.) Very brave of you to hold your nose and wade into the bilge water and challenge them.

That was a defining moment, and for them to attribute it to Thompson was, I bet, an on-purpose 'mistake' by someone within that transcription service. I'm wondering how many other 'mistakes' there are that have gone unnoticed. Many of us rely on the transcripts that are put out for our use. If you and others who complained to the news services hadn't seen this commission session with their own eyes and ears, this mistake might have passed as being authentic.

33. if just 1 % would do their little part....these war criminals would be
taken down.....thanks mouse7...you've done more than just a 'little' bit...that was a GREAT BIG chunk out of those nasty news distorters....very proud of you....

this shows what people can do just from a keyboard and I hope others are moved to action by your GREAT example.....

here's the article from Ramsey Clarke, where he explains that all it takes is one percent of the people to STAND UP....sadly, even in the Nation's Pro-Peace rallies on March 20th....we are still not anywhere close to one percent...many people, even here at DU, just sit and argue and DO NOTHING...action, that's what it takes, in every way....each give a little time and effort...and then one percent is there...and together, we take down the bush* cabal....

one percent is all it takes....
http://www.thesunmagazine.org/bully.html

"I think what all of this means is that we each have to do our own part, and become responsible, civic-minded citizens: we have to realize that we won't be happy unless we try to do our part. And if a small portion of us simply do our part, that will be enough. If even 1 percent of the people of this country could break out of the invisible chains, they could bring down this military-industrial complex - this tyranny of corporations, this plutocracy - overnight. That's all it would take: 1 percent of the people."

This was not an editing or proof error. This was not deigning to read what you publish.

Easy to see how Ambrose Bierce got his definition for "quotation" in The Devil's Dictionary.

QUOTATION, n. The act of repeating erroneously the words of another. The words erroneously repeated.
