HEADS UP CALIFORNIA DUers: Wanna kick some Issa ass?
For those not in the know, Darrell Issa in the 49th District in CA (roundabout San Diego) is the main guy behind the recall push for Davis. Say what you want about Davis, but Issa is an absolute, unrepentant piece of shit - convicted felon, wants to be Governor by getting 20% of the recall vote, doesn't give a damn about his constituents.

The guy who brought me out to San Diego has declared in the race against him. We went to see Kucinich speak last night, and Mike was introduced. The crowd went INSANE when they heard he was running against Issa.

Mike can win. Issa has alienated his mostly-GOP constituency, and Mike is planning to run right through the gap. While Darrell is eyeing Sacramento, Mike is going to crawl right up his back and take a House seat for us.

Wanna help?

http://www.byronforcongress.org/

My contact information for him is buried in my suitcase (I just got back), and I will post it tomorrow. Meantime, bookmark that website wherever you are. Kick him some cash, and if you are local, volunteer. We can snap Issa's back like a lobster.

1. it'd be great to watch Issa blow all his money on the governor's race
and then lose his House seat in 2004. Unfortunately his district is pretty Republican to the core. Isn't he in Orange County?

2. No, he's in San Diego...
...which is not as Republican as Orange or as eastern California but still as a county voted for Bush over Gore in 2000.

3. Definitely GOP land
It's one of those jury-rigged districts. But Issa has blown it with those folks, and a smart campaign can win. Doesn't matter, really. You fight the fights that need fighting. This one needs fighting, regarless of any 'inevitable' outcome.

5. If Issa wins the governorship who gives a damn if a Dem takes his seat
CA will still be screwed even worse by Issa.

6. He ain't going to win
Way too much baggage with the car theft and all. He basically screwed himself out of $2 million. But it would be nice to then see him get his ass thrown out next election.

9. Um
The House of Representatives in Washington DC is an incredibly important body, and worthy of the effort needed to rescue it from the GOP.

11. I hate to break it to you

The seat that Issa represents gave 58% of the vote to Bush in 2000 and only 38.8% of the vote to Gore, with 2.7% going to Nader.

Republicans have 135,769 voters to the Democrats' 85,746 voters in the seat. That's roughly a 50,000 vote deficit to make up.

No Democrat is going to win this seat. Even if the candidate you mention were to win the seat, which would be a miracle, he would probably lose it the next cycle.

Issa is not going to lose this seat no matter to a Democrat. Maybe if a primary challenge emerges he might lose there. But any chance to get rid of him will be in the GOP primary.

The General Election will just be a formality. The Democratic Party of CA is better off spending money in more compelling races.

16. There are more compelling opportunities
But, Will, if you all can raise enough money, poll well, and run a credible campaign, then who knows?

On the face of it, however, this seat looks hopelessly Republican.

20. The reason he won 59%
Edited on Wed Aug-06-03 11:33 AM by liberalnproud
is because district 49 is composed of mostly Camp Pendleton.

I don't think that these boys and their families are real happy right now.

edited to add last sentence

21. They won't vote Democratic
Hell, if you all can make a competetive campaign, raise good money, doorknock a lot, and poll well, then be my guest. Good luck.

Lord knows you'll need it in this seat.

18. Ummm, please get a photo editor!
Your pic -and others like it- locks up those using dial-up connections because of its size, thus preventing full participation in threads. Here's a great free editor, please consider using it or one like it:

23. As much as I would like to help,
limited resources have forced me to kick in the political butt my own Rep., Bill Thomas of Bakersfield and now part of the central coast. Any DU'ers with aspirations for the House of Representatives in Congress interested? We really need a motivated and electable candidate for this district.

There are lots of freepers, but also lots of liberals and a wide swing vote of senior citizens, who are watching Bill Thomas try to whittle away their health care and social security by subterfuge and double dealing. Also, our former Rep. Lois Capps, district of Santa Barbara is more than willing to help out anyone who is interested.
