I just saw Arlen interviewed live on the Philly ABC
station...

He looked and sounded ghastly...

He hasn't been altogether all there lately but he looked really upset.

As I said on another thread - this is not necessarily good news for Dems here in PA at this point. We are one screwed-up state. MY friend who lives in Williamsp[ort once told me that if you came up there where there's 30% real unemployment at least, and promised good roads, schools, infrastructure, jobs, etc. you would lose handily if you just wanted to outlaw private possession of bazookas or RPG's. Gun control issues are #1 in rural PA and Arlen has been their darlin' for years, even though he's Jewish. They excuse that for 2nd Amendment issues...

2. The numbers are slowly turning against him at this point. Is it...
possible that Spector has the inside info that says that he lost???

3. With 30% in...
Arlen has a small lead -about 7000 votes- watching amateur hour TV - the major network affiliates wait until later...

It's gonna be close methinks...

5. umm, he's seeing the same results as everyone else, and he's been
ahead by about 5 points consistently for over an hour. More than a third of the precincts are in.

9. I'd much rather have
Specter in the Senate than Toomey.

And it's hard to imagine any Democrat believing otherwise.

11. but if Toomey wins the primary we could easily get a Dem in the Senate
A Republican on another board said if Toomey wins he'll vote for Hoeffel.

18. I know...
Edited on Tue Apr-27-04 09:27 PM by Dookus
it's a big risk, though.

Do you really think Hoeffel could beat Toomey, but not Specter?

On edit: My parents live in PA, and I spent a LOT of time there as a kid. I just think a state that would elect Santorum would elect Toomey just as easily.

19. He could possibly beat both
but he'd have a better chance against Toomey. Remember that in the past Specter has gotten almost 40% in Philadelphia (extremely impressive for a Republican considering Gore carried it with over 80%) and usually percentages of around 60%+ in the inner suburban counties of Philadelphia. Hoeffel would completely blow Toomey out of the water in that area.

20. Thanks butterfly...
I just worry. A bird in the hand and all that....

I think I'd rather trust that Hoeffel can beat Specter than risk giving Toomey a seat in the Senate.

7. yup...
Unless all the early precincts are from Philly, it looks like he'll pull out a win.

8. Philly's coming in fairly quickly, though
Edited on Tue Apr-27-04 09:07 PM by goobergunch
KYW reports 159/509 precincts in in the PA-13 race. Montgomery County is only reporting 41/205, so the remainder must come from Philly. I'd estimate Philly is at least halfway in by now.

ON EDIT:

Of course, as I posted this, KYW refreshed and said the following:

Precincts Reporting: 3251 Of 9416 35%
Winner Candidate Party Incumbent Votes Vote %
Arlen Specter Republican 137,666 59%
Pat Toomey Republican 97,360 41%

14. things are looking good
Senator Hoeffel sounds good, doesn't it? :)

Plus this could cause a civil war within the GOP if the Club For Growth ends up costing them a Senate seat.

13. You should see the Repub
idiot from the 15th district who just won the nomination - I think his name is Dent....that could be wrong. I was laughing so hard at him since he and bush, if you added their IQ's, you'd still have a 2 digit number.

We have this channel 69 (!) on cable from Allentown. What a zero - the candidate and the station - but they were the only one showing early returns.

it's Toomey's old district but it did vote for Gore, how they ever elected Toomey is beyond me...

16. Might happen...
this guy Driscoll, the Dem, is ordinary but nice looking and that counts for a lot in this 'moranic' state.

Problem is, Pennsylvania just sucks - I mean, look at the history of our sports teams, our cities, and even our luck - we had, after all, Three Mile Island.

Boo-hoo city...

23. Pennsylvania has one asset!!!!!
If you have ever been to Gettysburg National Park I don't understand how you could not appreciate the beauty and historical significance of that hallowed ground. I am from West Virginia and I am jealous of Pennsylvania over the fact that they have such a jewel in their state. So at least be proud over the fact that your state played a big part in American and World history. :dem:

24. Pennsylvania has many assets
I love that state. My mother is from Shamokin and my father from Mt. Carmel. They now live in Mifflinburg.

I was raised on Long Island by then, but we spent all our summers back in Shamokin.

Yes, there are a lot of republicans there. But they're good, decent, hardworking people. All my cousins, aunts and uncles live there. They're good people.

PA got the short end of the stick when manufacturing jobs left and when the coal mines shut down. But you'd be hard-pressed to find a state with better people and I *KNOW* you won't find better fresh corn elsewhere :)
