Blame the "media"
Here we go again.

I have conservative family members who believe that the "media" is not telling what really is going on in Iraq.

Here comes the blame game. Rather than look at who is running the U.S. they think that the media is exaggerating the negative.
As the quagmire gets worse and worse they want to blame the messenger.

Sure sounds like the hawks of the Vietnam era. They think we could have "won" if only the news didn't focus on what they call the negative.

It also sounds like they listen to too much AM talk radio.

I think it's an issue of how they view the Vietnam quagmire and how they believe that it was all the bad press from Cronkike (sp?) refuting America's alleged success in the efforts. Reflecting over that, they must be thinking that the press is out to "undermine the Liberation of Iraq" in the same manner. I get these war advocates all the time telling me that we would've won Vietnam if it wasn't for the negative press and the lack of support at home.

Many of these same people, we should remember, are also fear and revenge-driven. Sept. 11 has become the hawks - and Bush's - rallying cry. Look where the Convention is being held... right in NYC. The photos, the explosions, the mutilated bodies... these are but graphics in a long-played video game to them, and they want to win it, at all costs. The players are not sprites and pixels, however. That red stuff is blood.

2. they're right...sotra
your family member is right, but not in the way they believe.

Te media isn't telling us what's "really going on", but it's in the form of civilian deaths, uprisings and cabinet deceptions.

I guess part of combat strategy is "think positively." or at least deceive effectively.

3. They are right

the media is NOT telling us what is going on in Iraq. The US media
is completely controlled by the Pentagon and the PNAC/Christian
conservatives. If you want "fair and balanced" you have to view
FOX and Aljazeera and take both with a grain of salt... and recognize
the both are telling "the truth" with a point of view.
