An Iraq War Memorial in my front yard--ideas?
Since the Bush admin doesn't want us to see the flag-draped coffins of those men & women killed in Iraq, AND since they really don't want us to watch Nightline tonight, it wouldn't be too illogical to think they won't want to erect some sort of war memorial to these fallen either. (well, maybe at least while barbara bush is still alive, so that her "beautiful mind" doesn't have to deal with the reality of her eldest son's folly.) Dammit, I'm NOT going to let that happen!!!!!

So here's what I've thought so far:

I have a nice size front yard. Not too big, not too small. I've been thinking of doing something about this for a while now, but have been stumped at (a) exactly what should comprise the memorial and (b) the cost.

I had initially thought 700+ flags would be good, but to fit in my yard, they'd have to be small flags. ditto for crosses, which I also nixed due to size & the fact that some who died may have been Jewish, Muslim, pagan, or atheist. I want this to be above all, a respectful display. Thought-provoking too, I hope, but respectful to the men & women who served.

I think I may have a keeper, but again, cost. 1 medium size flag for every 50 troops who have died. Thus far, that would be 14 US flags.

This wouldn't be controversial(I hope), and might make people think about what hell our troops are really facing right now. I was also toying with including flags of countries who've also seen casualties, but am not sure if that would expand the scope too broadly or add controversy.

Does this idea sound ok to y'all? Any other ideas out there? If so, let me know...like I said, It's my front yard. You can use it.

like a wall with names etc....

Also another DUer made little wooden crosses to memorialize
the fallen .

I'd also like to make a front yard memorial

2. You need to consider the possibility of vandalism
You could possibly consider something to represent each of the military branches.

Honor the dead and the living. And the living to continue living.

If you have a military base or national guard in the area would they be able to participate in some manner? Taps?

Are there any families of fallen troops in your area?

4. That's why I thought of the flags
I mean, aren't the Republicans supposed to be against flag desecration? So how can they vandalize the flags? "Yeah, I support the troops, so I'm going to egg your house because you have a war memorial in the front yard."

well, no one ever accused repubs of not being hypcritical, but....

I have thought of vandalism, which is why I want to keep a respectful tone to it. Can't be too "in your face" in my town.

I do think the idea for a symbol of each military branch is great.

As for the rest, the only military around here are in the recruiter offices at the mall, but they might be able to help out with the symbol part.

5. The Bush Mosaic pic...
freepers wouldn't dare vandalize a picture of their fearless leader... and if they tried, the Secret Service (SS)will track them down and k*ll them!
