There is a new "Manchurian Candidate" flick coming this summer.

With Meryl Streep, Denzel Washington. I saw the trailer last night.

I don't get it. Nothing can beat the 1962 original with Lawrence Harvey and Frank Sinatra. Why do it?

They should have made a movie about a functional illiterate, a coked out, dry-drunk, lying, AWOL son of an ex-president who becomes president by stealing the election with the help of the Supreme Court, his brother and father's consigliere, and who lied to the people and congress to get us into a pre-emptive war for oil and hegemony after disregarding terrorist threats which led to thousands being killed.

Of course, no fiction writer could have thought that one up.

1. "Bob Roberts" is the "Manchurian Candidate" of our era.
I dont think it should or really could be remade as its such a relic of Cold War culture...the original is sort of fun and retro...like "Sweet Smell of Sucess" or "Kiss Me Deadly"....

Now, for a movie that channels todays political "dark side", I think that would have to be "Bob Roberts".

2. They've redone Stepford Wives as well.
Only this time it's a slapstick comedy.

3. They should have made a movie about a functional illiterate...

They made that move, but we're all living in it, and we can't seem to find the exit from the theater.

4. Kinda of weird because it looks like the "programming" was done
in the Gulf War I, so I'm not sure where "Manchuria" comes into it. (Saw the trailer the other day)

5. How I miss Frank and JFK and Bobbie and MLK...
We have been dumbed down as a nation in our entertainment and politics.

It started on 11/22/63. All downhill from there.

6. Corporate Hollywood, bankrupt of ideas
so they remake a movie. The Psycho remake was just mediocre at best.

And The Manchurian Candidate...as one critic said about this remake "how do you improve on perfection?"

I still think the casting of almost every role in the original was brilliant. And Angela Lansbury should have got an oscar for her performance.

7. Hollywood studios have no guts anymore
All we get are sequels and remakes. There are plenty of talented people in Hollywood, but the big studios don't want to risk money on a new idea.

If they're going to do a remake, there are plenty of movies that had a good plot but bad acting or bad direction. They should pick one of those instead of a classic.

8. I know the mother of Streep's "daughter"
This is her first movie. She's a student at NYU and we're all anxious to see the film. How cool!
