36. He called the Stripes survey of 50% not willing to reenlist "unscientific"
and "informal." Now every soldier remotely associated with Iraq is stop-lossed until at least mid-Nov. They CAN'T get out, thanks to Rummy.

encouraged by setting the prisoners situation as separate from any legal system. He said NO. I hope this helps with the patriot act.

What if those driving the abuse aren't covered by the UCMJ, as is probably the case here?

when he knew they existed, to prepare to deal with them knowing they'd be broadcast, he says "We did ask, and were told there were no copies."

A decade in which the press gets a stupid answer like "no copies" and doesn't even blink, that's for sure! I won't hold my breath waiting for any of them to report that.

23. He got all pissy. We should expect more attacks in Iraq, and perhaps
in other countries INCLUDING THE USA where they will try to affect the elections like they did in Spain....
My comment: OK so now we know for sure: they are prepping the Americans for an attack here and by mentioning the Spaniards (whom they have characterized as cowards for not re-electing the puppet Aznar) they are prodding the Americans to re-select Bush so that we are not characterized as cowards...There you have it.

28. Someone please explain how I missed the Jan announcement
about the "abuse". Did the Pentagon make the 'announcement' they 'had concerns' through the Pensacola ads?

What I do remember the most about January's news was the administration loudly complaining that no good things are being reported and the media was being unfair.

35. Capitol Hill Blue, Oct. 2003: Rummy blew it
Rumsfeld was trying to defend the fact that seven weeks after U.S. forces entered Baghdad, Iraq was in a chaotic state. He read a series of excerpts, all of which were true of Iraq, from widespread looting and crime to supporters of the "former regime roaming the streets and countryside whose fate has to be determined."

"If these problems sound familiar, they should: they are historians' description of the conditions here in America in 1783 -- in the period after our nation's war for independence," Rumsfeld said.

This is an old rhetorical trick and vintage "Rummy," the nickname his friends give to the 72-year-old secretary of Defense. Like so much of Rumsfeld's rhetoric, there was a lot missing in this speech. The Iraqis did not free themselves. They didn't invite us to free them and though millions of Iraqis were glad Saddam Hussein was gone, they weren't glad we were there.

<cut>

What is most disturbing about this is that it is counter to the historical role of the secretary of Defense. He or she is supposed to nurture and build up U.S. armed forces, not tear them down.
