1. seymour hersch has
been saying this for days.

DIANE REHM: Sy Hersh, a number of e-mailers are asking what about female prisoners, were there any?

SY HERSH: Yes

DIANE REHM: How were they treated?

SY HERSH: Oh God, well, there was a seperate wing for females and juveniles and ahh, umm, I can just tell you there's video-tape of some very horrible things happening to some of the young boys in that jail. And so we haven't seen the end of this. I know that's terribly shocking to hear, but it's, it's, we haven't seen the end of this.

2. I even heard we flew over their country, dropped bombs on them
shot missiles at them, had a secret bombing campaign called "shock and awe" that would completely traumatize and freak out the entire population, and that we blew up about 10,000 Iraqi citizens.

But, I don't think anyone minded that too much.

7. Yes, the whole thing is steeped in a bizarre and hideous sort of irony.
Your comment is very astute.

10. This country is so completely conflicted with trying to rationalize
Edited on Fri May-07-04 09:23 PM by Jacobin
its behaviour that we have ALL become a parody of ourselves.

I find DU very strange tonight. All horrified at things that are really quite bad, but that are mostly just embarrasing because they involve naked bodies and sex.

This country is finished as a nation. Not because of the sex torture, but because of OUR reaction to it, i.e."we've done horrid things by taking pictures of naked people being traumatized!!" (let's get back to killing more Iraqis. That video game is not "x" rated)

16. Yep. TOTALLY with you.
Ever since this started coming out I've been screaming at people here on DU and in real life, "What the Hell is wrong with you people? We've been blowing babies heads off for MONTHS and THIS is what you get all worked up about?!!"

Beam Me UP!

24. What makes this worse is the Iraqi and Muslim reaction to it
not ours. I've seen a half dozen interviews with abused Iraqi victims and every single last one of them has said that it would have been better that they died.

Death becomes mundane - especially in war.

The irony of Bushwankers numbingly repetitive proclamations that "the torture chambers are no more" has been lost on no one. The bitter injustice of a country attacking a sovereign nation without provocation in the name of Superman, apple pie and Joe Namath sounded good and it was the easy, lazy thing to go along with.

Sure babies get their heads blow off but the important this is they're not OUR babies, are they? Thank GOD Bush took the fight to Iraq before they took over Canada and lobbed those 118 mile missiles at us.

I understand your point and you are in part correct but the prism has many other facets. Any society that consensually wages unprovoked war on another must demonize them first.

Check

This is usually accomplished by convincing the populace that they are really great benefactors by bringing a greater system/religion/lifestyle to the unwashed heathens.

Check

People expect death, mayhem and the sacrifice of soldiers during war.

Check

What people do NOT expect is to see EVIDENCE and I underline EVIDENCE of their "babies" behaving in the manner which they have ascribed only to the "animals".

See - the babies that lost portions of their skulls were just at the wrong place at the wrong time when a precision missile was being guided from an aircraft with unprecedented accuracy. That's different. You just can't trust a damn baby to be in the right place at the right time to save Superman, apple pie and Joe Namath.

What to do when your country is caught with its pants down and it's cig' smokin' bad ass bitches on the loose huh?

Edited on Fri May-07-04 09:33 PM by JohnOneillsMemory
Americans love violence but are horrified by sex.

Kill but don't strip! That is just too much to bear!

Violence=justice and power
Nakedness=shame and humiliation

The Master Race arrogance of sexually juvenile Americans can't bear the shame of being naked but revels in a righteous bloodbath.

Someone get me a plane ticket to Europe, please.

I was thinking the same thing. Too bad the big secret in the military is that straight men often participate in homosexual sex. It's a dirty secret that no one likes to talk about.

9. It's true.
Check out Lindsey Graham's comments:

A few minutes later, Graham told a press conference, “We’re talking about rape and murder here, we’re not just talking abut giving people a humiliating experience, we’re talking about rape and murder and some very serious charges.”

Worried about the propaganda effect of a Rumsfeld resignation, Graham said that although Rumsfeld “failed us,” it would risk sending the wrong signal to the enemy and “empower them” if he were forced to quit.

13. How crazy is that
The *first* one to go should be Rummy, and many should follow. We need direct apologies, accountability in the strongest terms possible, and whatever reparations can conceivably be made. The message to the world has to be swift and strong. I cannot believe Graham is such an idiot to express concern that others will be "empowered" if Rummy goes. These people do not understand the magnitude of this.

29. Empowering the enemies is the new buzzphrase
Media men like Scarborough and many different House and Senate Republicans are tossing out that phrase almost daily to attack any criticism of the President or the Secretary of Defense.

I'm not quite sure I see the logic. How would enemies be empowered? It seems to me, if anything, it would hurt our enemies because it would hinder their recruiting efforts.

17. I find this amazing, if true, in the homophobic armed forces, that
guards would force gay sex on a prisoner and fucking film it!

Perhaps the worst of these incidents were perpetrated by contractors (mercenaries)? It makes sense to me that they would be more apt to do whatever the hell they pleased.

Wow, this thing is blowing my mind.

19. The sexual aspect of this is kind of fascinating
I think that a lot of people on DU are so horrified because we NEVER WOULD HAVE THOUGHT OF ANY OF THIS. Bombing, you can't avoid knowing about. Shooting, killing, executing and variously demostrating man's inhumanity to man is just not going to come as a surprise. Doesn't mean we're not upset by it, but it's something that we learned about as toddlers, regularly see in movies and someone, somewhere, is often bombing someone in real life. This, OTOH, is what we used to think of as pretty perverse. We live in a country where a wardrobe malfunction drove people into a frenzy of upset. I read poignent letters to editors about the tragedy of the kiddies being exposed to a second or so of tit. The people perpetrating these particular offenses, and most likely the people ordering them, and going up a little higher, condoning them (until caught, of course) belong to the "respectable" side of the moral divide. The side that opposes the perversities that they imagine liberals indulging in on a regular basis. It always seemed that the RW was rather sex-obsessed. Apparently they have outlets that the left wouldn't think of.

27. This is the USA
The only thing that upsets the masses anymore is illicit sex; it's a direct reaction to the Fundies screaming "pervert" to anyone who shows any kind of sexual vibe. It's what they tried to get Clinton with Monica; I think it's highly ironic that what's going to cause this administration to be toppled will be their own sorid sex and torture scandal that dwarfs anything they tried to pin Clinton with..
