Berg's 'bizarre mystery with a connection to 9/11' -misc. updates
Edited on Thu May-13-04 06:58 PM by Lori Price CLG
Berg's 'bizarre mystery with a connection to 9/11' CBS News reports on what is turning into a bizarre mystery with a connection to 9/11. U.S. officials say the FBI questioned Berg in 2002 after a computer password Berg used in college turned up in the possession of Zaccarias Moussaoui, the al Qaeda operative arrested shortly before 9/11 for his suspicious activity at a flight school in Minnesota... Since Iraq remains under U.S. military occupation, it seems unlikely that the Iraqi police would have held Berg, or any other American, for such a length of time without at least the tacit approval of U.S. authorities. "The Iraqi police do not tell the FBI what to do, the FBI tells the Iraqi police what to do," Berg's father, Michael Berg told the AP. "Who do they think they're kidding?" The younger Berg told his family that U.S. officials took custody of him soon after his arrest and he was not allowed to make phone calls or contact a lawyer, his father said. http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2004/05/11/iraq/main616842.shtml

Diplomat's E-Mails Show Berg in Custody --A U.S. diplomatic official in Iraq told the family of slain American Nicholas Berg that he was being detained by the U.S. military when they lost contact with him for several days in early April, according to e-mails provided by the family Thursday. U.S. government officials have said Berg, who was found dead last weekend in Baghdad, was detained by Iraqi police and was never in the custody of American forces. http://www.timesdaily.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20040513/APA/405130871

Executioner wore gold ring - forbidden by Islam: Behind the Masks --Clues From Graphic Tape of Beheading Could Help Identify Killers (ABCNEWS.com) A close examination of the tape shows none of the five masked men is wearing gloves, so federal officials are trying to determine if there are any tell-tale tattoos on their hands. One of the clues the FBI and CIA is studying is the large gold ring Zarqawi is wearing on his right hand, giving off a glare several times during the six-minute tape. http://www.khilafah.com/home/category.php?DocumentID=9529&TagID=2

(*As to Zarqawi: From the Washington Post, March 4, 2004 --Alleged Berg Killer Reported Dead in March --Leaflet Says Extremist Al-Zarqawi Killed (The Associated Press, Thursday, March 4, 2004; 10:10 AM) A Jordanian extremist suspected of bloody suicide attacks in Iraq was killed some time ago in U.S. bombings and a letter outlining plans for fomenting sectarian war is a forgery, a leaflet signed by a dozen alleged resistance groups said. Abu Musab al-Zarqawi was killed in the Sulaimaniyah mountains of northern Iraq "during the American bombing there," according to the eight-page leaflet circulated this week in Fallujah, a city 30 miles west of Baghdad that is a hotbed of anti-U.S. resistance activity. ...It said al-Zarqawi was unable to escape the bombing because of his artificial leg.) http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A29777-2004Mar4.html

1. Thank you Lori, this is very interesting
However, the WAPO article on al-Zarqawi being dead, (and having an artificial leg) seems to have disappeared from the page. Hmmm...

Enough to make you go to the nearest hardware store to buy a big roll of tinfoil...
