halliburton(s)
In this day and age cynicism is perhaps looked upon as the only answer, with decisions made not to maximize good, but to minimize evil (on a personal level). However, some people have mined a much richer vein, that of righteous indignation. Indignation is the light created by the fires of cynicism; it is the purifying flame of cynicism pushed beyond the point of idleness. Indignation is what happens when you realize that indifference, no matter how hip it might appear, is a dead-end street. Luckily, while some people just ignore the big issues (out of fear or ignorance - it amounts to the same thing, doesn't it?) or avoid doing anything but pissing in the wind, there are bands like the halliburton(s), a band that has decided that to remain idle is to endorse evil. Featuring the musical leadership of jazz protégé Nathan Bell, the halliburton(s) offer up funky, acoustic based tunes that allow the listen to groove while absorbing and digesting the lyrics, intelligent (and often humorous) lyrics of righteous indignation and scathing attacks on the current regime that has pushed the United States into a despicable war that serves only to fill corporate coffers. With a sound like Lenny Kravitz unplugged and lyrics that might have brought a smile to Joe Hill or Woodie Guthrie, the halliburton(s) offer up a tight little EP that reminds you that it's our duty not just to question authority, but to ACT on the questions that are raised. Formed with a clear-cut goal of ousting George W. the halliburton(s) attack their target with dogged determination, pointing out the personal and political shortcomings of the current regime with humor and insight and encouraging dissent and opposition to their policies and positions. This little EP, recorded and released independently, is like the stone from David's sling, with the Bush administration being the Goliath on the receiving end. Musically, the halliburton(s) offer tunes that are the sugar that helps their medicine (message) go down. Tasty treats await those who want more than a rhymed equivalent of Noam Chomsky, because their mellow, jazzy acoustic grooves are worth the price of admission alone. Don't be afraid to speak up, don't be afraid to be moved to action, don't be afraid to listen to the halliburton(s), and, most importantly, don't be afraid to "Lick Bush".
