Well, "Back-covering" - just changed the title for effect.

A vague new U.S. warning that al Qaeda may be planning a massive attack smacks of political back-covering and campaigning, not just a call for heightened vigilance, analysts and former government officials say.

Stung by accusations that the Bush administration ignored key intelligence in the run-up to the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks, officials may now be issuing warnings to prove to Americans they are on the ball this time, say terrorism analysts on both sides of the political fence.

a whole slew of politicos and scientists will hit the airwaves, telling us the "big one" is on the way, it's going to hit "sometime in the next 25 years." They don't do it for enlightenment; they want only to cover their ass.

More likely in this case, ShrubCo wants to divert attention from a failed speech; that Chalabi -- indeed, the entire run-up to war -- may have been nothing more than the Iranians playing the Administration for saps; that CDs with images from Abu Ghraib are for sale for 50 cents apiece in the marketplaces of Iraq and will soon be splashed all over the internet. So surprise, the malAdministration wants us to focus our attention on another vague terrorist warning -- "the most frightening we've ever seen."

What am I supposed to do? Keep an eye out for people I don't know flying cropdusters I don't own? Or am I supposed to still have an eye out for terrorists carrying Old Farmers' Almanacs? Or, as seems most likely this go-round, am I supposed just to bury my head in the sand and not see the negative poll numbers.

We have seen the enemy, Pogo said. And today he might conclude the enemy is that small portion of us all that permits fear to rule our lives.
