SF Art Gallery Owner Beaten ... by Patriotic Americans
Read about this in the Chronicle the other day, didn't see any other threads about it. Absolutely nauseating, especially for San Francisco. Guess there are brownshirted goons everywhere, these days....

Feh.

Attacked for art, S.F. gallery to close

A week ago, a man walked into the gallery and spat in Haigh's face. On Tuesday, Haigh decided to temporarily close the gallery and began to consider giving up on her dream of owning an art gallery. Just two days later, another man knocked on the door of the gallery and then punched Haigh in the face, knocking her out, breaking her nose and causing a concussion.

1. sign of the times?
there are people who call themselves American and "patriots" who are fundamentally no different than the Taliban, and especially, who think that being patriotic means beating up your fellow Americans for exercising free speech. Well, there are violent and cowardly thugs everywhere who will seize on any reason whatsoever to hurt another human, especially one who is relatively helpless.

The fact that hundreds called indicates a rather large "conspiracy" of some sort.

Maybe we could help the gallery owner out (and SF police) with a little web research and try to find the group that's organizing and instigating this (if not Free Republic). Let's not be helpless in the face of violence and intimidation.

2. excellent idea
The freepers were my first guess, too, although I wouldn't be surprised if the "organizational factor" was a radio nazi like M. Savage or one of his ilk.

It's upsetting that she's closing down the gallery, although I can't really blame her. The other thing that drives me nuts is, the viewpoint represented by the thugs who did this is very much a minority in the Bay Area. Now that the public at large is aware of the situation, of course, the goons have scurried back under their rock.
