George Soros putting his fortune behind a new cause: Ousting Bush

George Soros bet against Polish communism when Solidarity was still underground and against Serbia's Slobodan Milosevic when he was one of the most feared men in Europe. He bet against the dollar and made "the killing of a lifetime." Then he bet against the pound and made a bigger one.

Now Soros, a storied financial and political speculator, says another of his bets is about to pay off: more than $15 million against President Bush.

The Hungarian-born billionaire, who had vowed to spend more if necessary to deny the president re-election, says he's contributed enough to achieve his goal. "There probably will be some further contributions, but I don't expect any substantial increase," he says in an interview. "Large numbers of people are beginning to see the Bush administration in the same light as I do. Frankly, I don't think I'll need to do a lot more. ... I now take the defeat of Bush more or less for granted."

1. Soros is a great man..

He has done more than his share for our cause. Perhaps he has done enough that he is content to take Bunnypants defeat for granted, but not me. It would be wise to work till the very end to see this happen.

3. I'm kind of in agreement

I admire him and all, but when you get to be that wealthy don't you kind of have whole groups of people around you to tell you waht you want to hear? At any rate, I think there's still plenty to do to defeat Bush.

Then again I (and most of us here at DU) can do something that might be tricky for Mr. Soros to do. I can go out and talk to all my friends, particularly those who might be tempted to buy Bush's line of nonsense.

I think he has done enough. We can't simply sit around waiting for him to bail us out of all our problems. Don't you think it's time we started to organize the same as the right?

11. This is a fact....

The reason the right wing neo-cons have gotten so powerful is because of right wing talk radio like Rush Limpballs and TV evangelicals such as Jerry Falhell, telling people what to think and what to do. They preach to people who aren't smart enough to do their own thinking or are very insecure and need the reinforcement of "religious nuts" to make them feel good.

We NEED progressive radio to debunk the lies of the gopers for those who are not independent thinkers. Yes, I think that backing Air America radio with $$ would be one of the BEST ways to support the progressive cause and I imagine Soros can decide for himself when he has done enough. This isn't saying that we don't have "our" part to do, but Randi Rhodes can reach people in 4 hours that might otherwise never do their own research for the truth. The left will never be organized in some ways like the right is because most of us are independent thinkers and don't need a church group to tell us how to vote.

5. I have relatives....

...visiting from Hungary. I just happened to ask them yesterday if they knew who George Soros was and they said "OF COURSE!!!" They went on to list off all the wonderful things he has done for Hungary which is a poor country. He is very honored and admired there.

I don't yet take for granted Bush's defeat, but it does make me feel a little better that Soros does.

Richard Mellon Scaife, Rupert Murdoch, Conrad Black, Rev. Moon, the Coors Family, the Olin Foundation, etc... Last I heard, they had given $2.5 Billion to $3.5 Billion over the years.

As my state Democratic party chair said the other day, "if you have any energy left on November 2nd, you have not been working hard enough!" We have to rally the apathetic, the disenfranchised, and those who feel unrepresented, and give them a reason to vote, and a reason to hope. We can win with enough VOTERS, not with enough billionaires.

back in the early 90's I heard. I don't have a source for this handy. Anybody else know about this?
