CA and FLA DU'ers how are Jeb and Auhhnold doing in Popularity ?
I haven't heard much about either of them lately on DU. My impression from what little comment there is here, is that both are still pretty popular.

How can this be?

1. Most conservative/republicans are non-thinkers,
that's why those guys are still popular.

3. Arnold's popular for a few reasons
One is that the "liberal media" still love him, because they get to interview a movie star!

Another is that the common folk still think of him as a movie star, and not as the governor. After the charisma vacuum of Davis, he looks good, on the surface.

A lot of focus and blame are going to Bush, so Arnold isn't coming in for any grief on the economy, etc. He's only been in for a few months, and nobody really expected miracles, even his staunchest supporters.

Finally, the legislative season is just now heating up, and this is when we'll see some potential changes in his popularity. He's about to be forced, hopefully, to veto or sign some popular or unpopular bills. We'll see how his PR department handles that.

Helmick announces he'll retire sooner than he wanted to

Lynda Gledhill, Chronicle Sacramento Bureau
Wednesday, June 2, 2004

Sacramento -- California Highway Patrol Commissioner D.O. "Spike" Helmick announced his retirement Tuesday, saying he was leaving earlier than he wished at the request of Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger's administration.

Helmick, who served three governors in the patrol's top position, said he would have liked to stay through the end of the year when the mandatory retirement age would have kicked in but accepted the decision that he would be leaving earlier. Helmick turns 60 on Dec. 13 and could have stayed until the end of that month.

"My original plan was to stay. This is fine. I can work this out," he said in an interview about his Sept. 15 retirement date.

At an earlier news conference, Helmick broke down when asked about leaving the force he had served for 35 years.

"It's tough. It's very, very tough,'' he said, tears welling in his eyes.

I think his popularity is still because of the honeymoon, we he really gets down to brass tacks his numbers will fall. It isn't as easy of a job as he thought it was going to be.

6. Charisma? I never though Asshole had charisma, even when he
wasn't running for Governor. But, then authoritarian males who treat women as plaything sex objects never appealed to me anyway.

8. I don't think he has any, either
But then, I never understood 90% approval ratings for Bush after 9/11.

4. Our Democratic leaders are kissing Arnold's feet.
They back every fascist thing he does. He destroyed worker's comp and higher education in California. The Democratic leaders got together with him and backed initiatives that require cutting services before raising taxes on the rich. THe only one in our state government who has stood up to him is Phil Angelides. The whole thing is disgusting.

7. When Jeb was announced at the Lightning game the other night ...
He was booed then when his faithful heard the boos they made a weak attempt to drown out the boos with cheers. It seemed forced but it passed pretty quickly. Everyone's mind was on the game.

9. Arnold is pretty popular, but he isn't going to campaign for Bush
Edited on Wed Jun-02-04 02:06 PM by Bombtrack
outside California, which means basically his support for Bush is very soft cause everyone knows California is relatively safe for Kerry.

When I was last in Florida Jeb was pretty 50/50.

10. He's just as bad as or worse than Bush on most issues.
Arnold has hurt health care, children and workers in California. Kids in California can no longer expect to go to college or to survive their youth because of Arnold.
