Religious Right paranoia about the LGBT human-rights move.
Hey, DUers! Check this out - http://www.crosswalk.com/news/weblogs/mohler/?adate=6/3/2004#1266186

Just a little religious wingnut paranoia about how "some people" are conspiring to appear to be normal families (which they are ... but the truth never bothers these guys).

It is extremely comforting to know that my nutty relatives in the midwest are reading this crud .

1. I cannot tell you how many
"normal families" I have seen that are totally FUBAR. For light reading, I suggest a little book I read in high school: "I will call it Georgie's Blues." This book is about a totally messed up family, headed by a preacher. The household was a dictatorship, full of verbal and other mental abuses. Truth was non-existant, and it took a very mentally whipped small boy running away from home just to get Preacher Dad to snap out of his messed up PR game. In my aunt and uncle's "Christian" home, as my "christian" cousins tell me, they were "knocked across the room" if they did anything wrong.

Gay people have nuturing instincts too; just because some boy likes other boys or some grrl likes other grrls does not make them somehow inhuman and incapable of providing a nurturing background. I personally do not have a nurturing bone in my body; but for those LGBTQ people that do, there should be EQUITY!!

2. Why do 'phobes read all the gay books?
".. A partial explanation of the homosexual movement's success can be traced to the 1989 publication of After the Ball: How America Will Conquer Its Fear and Hatred of Gays in the 90s. Published with little fanfare, this book became the authoritative public relations manual for the homosexual agenda .. "

So, how many gay people have actually HEARD of this book?
And this speaker claims it's a guidepost?

Build your basic principle on sand and all your arguments sink fast.

6. Exactly, JustFive!
And boy, do I know about 'normal' families - especially 'model' conservative ones. I barely speak to my mother for reasons I shall not bore you with. And I was a social worker for seven years. My viewpoint always has been - you do what you must to rid your life of dangerous negativity.

7. Also, my motivation in the post was 'awareness.'
I certainly hope that I did not offend with my words or posting. But I did want to make DUers aware of some of the chunks that are floating out there Now, I think I'll go contribute to human rights causes just to cleanse my brain of such drivel.

9. Models are good & fine...
... but ideals are too often used against us by people who barely represent the ideal themselves! But there is no stopping them in telling us how 'bad' we are and never taking the time to analyze their own lives.

The funny thing about Gay Families. They just don't happen because someone forgot the birth control last night. There are no Accidents, and hopefully gay couples who want kids actually plan for them.

Will some gay families fall apart in the future? Certainly. Will others last throughout their entire lives? Certainly.

We should celebrate all families that can stay together and work through problems. We shouldn't ridicule some families who can't simply because they failed in some 'ideal'.

And using sources 'out of books' (as the speaker here does) instead of real-life people going through their day to day routines trying to make it through is just ridiculous.

You don't tell someone "I don't like you because I read it in a book!" but it seems AOK for the zealots to Understand Without Knowing.

11. Then I have a question...
Would you suppose this book is a 'foundation' of the gay success stories?

Perhaps these writers were the ones who started/sponsored/ignited the 'Creating Change' workshops?

12. It has been a very long time since I read it
What I recall it being was largely a manifesto for an ad campaign as much as anything else. I haven't exactly seen the ads. It is possible that they became campaign consultants or something but I don't know if they did.

10. The book they pan . .
. . has an Amazon sales ranking of 947,608 . .

. . which means, I think, that there were 947,607 books offered by Amazon that sold better than this one over the last month.

With hot ratings like that I guess I understand their fear that the "homosexual agenda" will soon rule the world.

</sarcasm>

14. Homosexual Activists
Funny, but you'd think activists would be easier to find on a Yahoo Search!

Marshall & Madsen... can't find much on them at all except as authors of this book which gets the MOST hits on in religious right websites... but NOTHING much on them at all otherwise.

Did find out one piece of information on them in a review of the book "... put forth by Marshall Kirk and Hunter Madsen, two Harvard-trained psychologists..."

Note how the RWs call them 'gay authors' and leave out the 'Harvard-Trained psychologists'.

15. That's good.
There's nothing wrong with great ideas for advocating (marketing) a human rights cause, anyway! What's wrong with the wingnuts? 'Course we could go on and on and on...

17. There's no such thing as a "normal family"
Every person here knows that NO family is "normal". There are millions of reasons for this ... because there are millions of people who belong to millions of families.

Well, maybe that's not true. When there are millions of people in millions of families, surely a norm must emerge?

Yes, because economic, psychological and social aspects of a large population can be normalized.

No, because the individuality of each person, as a member of a family, isn't accounted for. We're not talking worker-bees here. I can guaran-damn-tee you that my Aunt Bet is crazier than yours.

Every family is unique. It's the dynamics that makes us this way - the ebb and flow of emotions and love, the give and take of relationships, the hurt and healing that we all experience.
