6. But don't you see we're winning?
Edited on Wed Aug-13-03 03:38 PM by stopbush
I mean, if the Iraqis are being forced to come up with "improvised land mines" then we must be winning. We're down to fighting the small pockets of improvised land mine constructors. Oh, wait, I forgot about the small pockets of improvised land mine designers! Oh, shit, and the small pockets of improvised land mine parts suppliers.

Mercy me!

Head...about...to...explode

7. Wait, how is the Sunni Triangle loyal to Saddam?
Seems to me that I recall they were enemies in the past. Of course, that was before our imperial occupation...

10. Nope, I was wrong
I was thinking of the Shias, not Sunnis...

Sorry, my bad.

"Under Saddam Hussein's leadership, the Baath Party and the Baathist state became predominantly Sunni. Discrimination against the Shia in Iraq has existed since the British installed a Sunni king in the 1920s, who gathered around him a Sunni elite. In 37 years of monarchy, only four Shia prime ministers came to power, as opposed to 19 Sunnis. The favouring of Sunnis became more marked under Baath rule due to its wide recruitment of army officers, who are mostly Sunni, as well as the idea prevalent among some Sunni pan-Arabists that the Shia are outsiders, not properly Arab. Many Shia religious leaderships, moreover, took an isolationist and apathetic stance towards politics in Iraq.

Discrimination against the Shia took many forms, including the imposition of a Sunni interpretation of the history of Iraq, the Arabs and Muslims to be taught in schools; restriction of Shia religious celebrations and expressions; lack of development of the infrastructure in predominantly Shia areas; and stifling Shia political organisation as well as career opportunities."

12. Saddam is a Sunni
The so-called "Sunni Triangle" is a new-fangled media term used to describe the areas to the north of Baghdad, with Baghdad as the southern tip, where US trrops are facing the most resistance. Since it is inhabited mainly by Sunni muslims, as opposed to the Shi'ite muslims in the south, it has been dubbed the Sunni Triangle by CENTCOM and their lapdog minions in the US press corps.

However, it was the case that Saddam drew his support from the Sunni populations, while oppressing the two other major population groups, the Shi'ites and the Kurds. So, it stands to reason that the favored group under the old regime would put up the most resistance to the new one. That's the "Saddam loyalists" line - a load of crap for the most part.

Increasingly, (in my estimation) we will see Shi'ite uprisings, first down the line of attack (Najaf, Nasiriyah, then all across the south). These will be mainly uncoordinated with the fairly well organized Sunni resistance (apparently, the base at Ar Ramadi is shelled nightly now, and not just one or two then go), at least through next spring. Once oil sabotage begins in earnest in the south, we will see a greater crackdown, and greater resistance. It's not a pretty picture, and I do hope I'm wrong. Best case: hand it over to the UN as soon as practicable, forfeit all claims or contracts established under the occupation system (which are unconscionable contracts, in any case, for the people of Iraq), and bring all US/UK colonizing forces out of country.
