Press: Bush's Pope visit backfired
BBC has a very interesting list of what commentators all over Europe are saying about Bush's visit with the Pope:

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/europe/3779297.stm

The president of the United States is paying a high price for his rapprochement with the Holy See in order to obtain the Pope's blessing for the new approach being taken in dealing with Iraq. In the Clementine Room... John Paul II revealed his hand to world public opinion. His welcome to the first citizen of the United States was warm, his homage to the sacrifice of the American soldiers in liberating the people of Europe 60 years' ago was sincere, but then came the examination of his guest's conscience. God will perhaps forgive, but Karol Wojtyla does not forget.

La Repubblica - Italy

The Pope's remarks to President Bush were, on balance, more critical than not and on balance Mr Bush will be fortunate if the visit does not lose him more votes than it won him.

Irish Independent - Ireland

Bush had really hoped his audience with the Pope would give him a boost in the campaign for the Catholic vote in the presidential elections on 3 November. Now, though, his campaign strategists are worried.

Die Tageszeitung - Germany

There was no reproach. His Holiness merely reminded Bush that the Vatican's unequivocal position against the Iraq war had not changed an iota...

2. how well has Bush's visit fared amongst the American press
and American voters?

They're the ones who'll determine whether Mr. Bush gets elected (or re-selected) in November.

7. I honestly don't think Americans care
This country is so polarized, I don't see how it will make that big of a difference. I doubt the undecided voters will take Bush's European Vacation in to account this November.

3. The truth is that the Pope and *'s camp have more in common
than they do differences on account of the fact that both are ultra conservative.

11. Agree. He has made sure he has collected all the ULTRA-CONSERVATIVE
BISHOPS AND ARSCHBISHOPS around him so when he dies there are only ULTRA CONSERVATIVE OPTIONS.

4. Here's an interesting one:
The president of the United States has timed his European visit well. The anniversary of D-Day is the most unsuitable possible day for an anti-American protest in France that could be imagined.
