Please don't berate Reagan for the immediate time
I despise Reagan and his policies, but I don't think it's fair to turn his death into a quasi-holiday. What if Clinton or Carter died? Would you want the Freepers celebrating and having a mass orgy over it? BTW, this post isn't a "don't criticize the President, period" type of thing, I just don't think it shows Liberals in a good light if we're cheering on his death.

1. I have NO respect for Reagan in life and I truly hated him, but...
...he was a president of the United States, a lousy one granted, and because he was a United States President I will not disrespect him in death solely because of the office which he held. It would not be an appropriate thing to do at the time of his death. He was loved by his family and I offer my condolences to them. Also: He was very ill and probably had no quality of life. For that reason, I am happy that it is over for him.

3. I agree, no one deserves to suffer and die slowly from alzheimers.

7. Yeah no one deserves to die from alzheimers.
But for some there is karma.

Just think of all the ordinary HARD WORKING Americans who lack access to healthcare due to policies enacted by Reagan and the conservatives who followed him.

Hard for me to feel for a rich evil man who died of alzheimers when other more deserving working Americans have the disease.

This is a man who ignored AIDS for a couple of years.

10. Then how about a little respect for the family...
In reality, its the family of the dead that suffers the most.

15. I didn't realize the Reagan's trolled this board
don't squash people expressing their opinions through that phony guilt crap (it's not just you, I've seen it all over the board). We are here to discuss things. I think 90% of the people here hated his guts, but we're not throwing parties over it. We're merely stating reasons why we won't be giving him any freaking tributes.

19. If only what you were saying were the case...
"but we're not throwing parties over it. We're merely stating reasons why we won't be giving him any freaking tributes."
... I think you need to read some more threads, a number of people are saying they will be happy/celebrate this day and that his death is a good thing.

I aint gonna throw any kind of memorial service, but I will still have sympathy for him and especially his family.

23. I agree with that sentiment
what I object to is the injection of phony sympathy for a family that will never see or hear these comments. We can say whatever about the classiness/humanity of the comments being made. I choose to show restraint because there are plenty on here going over the top. We don't necessarily need any more of that. I'm someone who believes that those that lack humanity in their treatment of others deserve none in return. When people on here complain that we shouldn't badmouth him because he "suffered so long", I'll tell them to think about all those homeless, mentally ill, and AIDS victims that he fucked over. Then tell me he and his family are worthy of even the slightest hint of compassion. The only time he and his family did anything for the greater good was their support of Alzheimers and stem cell research. Even then it was for such selfish reasons it makes me sick.

That being said, yes there are many people going a little too far, but that's their prerogative. The last thing we need here is Free Republic style censorship and lockstep behavior. The moderators here do a great job and will know when it's appropraite to rein people in. Let people get over this initial reaction. There is a lot of justified anger on here and it's not right to expect everyone to abide by the standards we would live by personally, especially when we don't know precisely how everyone here was personally affected by the Reagan Era. Let them vent.

24. Im not trying to censor anyone...
Im having a hard enough time restraining myself.

Why is sympathy phony if the family never sees it? One should not have sympathy solely for the sake of knowing that it will be seen by the reciever of said sympathy.

30. I'm a widow....
....and I had a husband who I loved very, very much. Tho I hated Reagan and his politics, I can clearly identify with the pain that Nancy Reagan is going through. It hurts like nothing has ever hurt in my life - to lose the person who was the other half of me. I guess no matter how much I hated Reagan, I can identify with the pain that another widow is feeling on the day she lost her beloved husband. So, though I hated Reagan, I cannot say anything bad about Reagan right now. Nancy may be a right-winged snob and way out of line on a ton of things, but she clearly loved her husband and stood by him and nursed him faithfully through his last illness as I did my husband. So for this reason, I feel the pain she and her family are feeling. I am glad that it is over for both of them. There is nothing worse than watching someone you love die of a horrible illness.

6. I agree 100%
If people wanted to discuss specific policies and/or actions he took, which they disagreed with, that would seem in better taste. Taking pleasure in human suffering is perhaps not the level we want to be at.

11. There's a difference between cheering
and stating the obvious.

The man treated all like shit, even his own step-children. He managed to treat most of the people that lived in America like shit.

I'm not cheering.

Why do people have such difficulty separating the event from the person?

I hate the actions of his disease as much as anyone, but it doesn't make me get gooey and gushy about respecting someone who treated all like shit.

I was wrong. Of course, Nancy had to deal with the step-children.

Do not tell me I have hate. That isn't very sympathetic of you.

At least my mistake didn't cause anyone to die of AIDS or starvation.

13. I agree.
I can't say I hated the man and I can't even say I hated his policies, I wasn't even alive for the majority of his Presidency.

I know he wasn't the best President, probably not even close, but I know he was not the worst (we all know who that is).

I think it's very important to be respectful.

My condolences to his family.

16. Reagan was the man responsible
Edited on Sat Jun-05-04 04:52 PM by Snoggera
for starting the train this country has been headed in to hell.

Deficits of record proportions? No problem. The poor will just have to make do.

AIDS? What's that? Sure, he finally decided to appropriate $1 million for research after thousands had already died. He didn't care. It was, after all, a gay plague.

He told people that if they didn't like how his policies affected people in certain parts of the country, they could "vote with their feet.". Sure. People with nothing were supposed to walk from Michigan to Arizona to get a job.

I could, and undoubtedly will, go on.

edit: He said TREES CAUSE POLLUTION

I've just begun researching former Presidents..hadn't started on Reagan yet..
