Will they politicise Reagan's death and funeral?
Edited on Sat Jun-05-04 05:46 PM by Cronus
I'm expecting them to do the whole state funeral thing and politicise it up the yazoo. I bet the "politicising" of Wellstone's death is quickly forgotten as they ramp up the political rhetoric to the point of wingnuts singing "God Bless America" all over the TV to lament "America's loss" and exhorting the populace to support George W. Bush if they want to please the memory of St. Reagan.

Oh, and expect the calls to put his visage on Mt. Rushmore.... it's inevitable.

the animosity between the Reagan and * familes is no secret, and I really believe that the remaining Reagan family members will not help * win anything other than a quick trip back to Crawford.

I didn't know the Reagans and Bushes didn't like each other. This is the first I've heard of it. Oh cool! I hope Nancy refuses an important request or two in the coming weeks. She was always smarter than her husband.

9. I can pretty much guarantee it.
Just love the double standards that Repukes have for themselves and everyone else.

Unlike the Wellstone funeral, there will be absolutely no recriminations or suggestions of impropriety at all, not even from Democrats, who will be too intimidated to say anything, or to point out the hypocricy.

I've always wondered if they would end up doing to Reagan what the Soviets did to Lenin after his death.

12. Define Politicizing
I don't think it will be anything like a rally. I don't think prominent Dems who attend the funeral will be booed. I say this because the ramifications of the Wellstone event are directly responsible for Coleman getting into the Senate, and I am pretty sure the Republicans took notice of this. And after all, they are also experts at exploiting phony civility, courtesy and decorum for their own ends.

But will there be overarching themes of nationalism and eulogies that praise Reagan and his brand of conservativism? Absolutely.

15. I think you are correct about the "boos"
but remember - those were not orchestrated, but spontaneous - hard to control a spontaneous crowd. Don't think it will happen, but if it does - it will happen the same way it happened at the Wellstone Memorial and at the 911 tribute at the ballpark in NYC (with Hillary getting booed).

I would be very surprised if there were not straight out remarks about remembering his legacy through ... voting for things and people that carry on that legacy. Eg a little less direct than at the Wellstone Memorial - but not much less direct.

19. Bullshit. Wellstone's Memorial was a celebration.
The media's spin on Wellstone's Memorial was responsible for any pro-Coleman sympathies, not the memorial itself.

And they wouldn't dare spin Reagan's memorial (in whatever form it takes) that way.

I don't really buy the "it's all the media's fault" excuse, personally, but even if you do, it was still an incredibly bad idea.

Maybe Rick Khan felt better after giving his speech, but IMO the cost for his feelings -- and the crowd's -- was too high.

33. You don't tell people how to mourn under any circumstances.
The family approved the Memorial. That's all anybody needed to know.

The bullshit Puritan idea that this or that is not an appropriate way to grieve is the height of rudeness.

And the fact that the media wolves ran with this after a MAN, HIS WIFE AND HIS YOUNG DAUGHTER WERE BURNED TO DEATH was one of the most disgusting displays of sacrilege imaginable.

Edited on Sat Jun-05-04 07:06 PM by DoveTurnedHawk
You want to complain about bullshit Puritanism? Be my guest. I'll complain right along with you, in fact. But the fact is, that's how much of our country is. The fact is, blaming the media is easy, but anyone with the slightest common sense ought to have known that a memorial like that was not going to go over well with middle America. People knew cameras were there. People knew prominent Republicans were there.

Wellstone's death was an absolute tragedy. It was even more tragic that the memorial for his death helped elect a man to the Senate who opposes nearly everything Paul Wellstone stood for.

20. Saint Reagan...
I call him The Smoked Gipper... Smoked as far back as 1980, if not earlier.

They sure as well will politicize this and spin anything the Dems do as a response.

The only thing I will do is what the repukes in MN have done about Wellstone: Get a bumper sticker saying "Reagan is dead, get over it." The repukes will see it and hopefully knows what it feels like.

I'd actually put BOTH on my car, just to prove the ultimate point about people...

30. Yes, I do...
I just think it's foolish to believe that the funeral of a politician will NOT be political, because most politicians have dedicated a huge portion of their lives to politics.

The difference between Reagan and Wellstone, of course, is that for the most part, Wellstone fought for the RIGHT things to do, while Reagan fought for the wrong things (and that's a TREMENDOUS understatement). But I think it's certain that some degree of politicizing is going to occur.

28. Yes. Republicans will line up to claim a piece of the "mantle"..and DU'ers
apparently will line up to carve up the body. Sad all around.

I'm a Californian, I'm gay, I have AIDS and waited for years to hear a national figure say the word (Jesse Jackson at the Dem convention),

but I also know what a long debilitating death looks like up close and personal.

I'll separate the political man from the husband and father for now.

I know the Republican party will canonize Reagan over the next few weeks. I don't buy it. But I don't need to kick the corpse (obscure Irish joke reference)

Thanks.
