As a child of the 80's I learned how to mistrust gov't from Reagan, but
I have to admit, as much as I knew this country was falling apart and taking part in real evil under him - HIS SPEECHES WERE ALMOST HYPNOTICALLY GOOD!

He would, at least to a young kid, really suck you in to his speeches and get you to forget how much you hated him. At least that's how it was for me.

I hate to admit it but that's how I felt then, it even made me angrier at him for it!

1. He was an actor. He used it to his advantage like that.
At least you were young and that is understandable. At least you weren't like the grown adults who fell for it all the same way.

I don't know why more people couldn't see how much of a joke it was that an actor was elected President.

2. I didnt have a TV or watch much TV in the 1980s....
Being in college, and then, out of college, being pretty poor, my enterttaiment was radio, and I read the newspaper and newsmagizines, not much TV at all.

So, I guess I missed the mass hypnosis of the Reagan era...

3. I know exactly what you mean. I watched the re-election speech as
a child and wrote a letter to him. I got a picture in return. My parents weren't even watching with me. I loved his speeches. They made me feel like everything was great with our country. His optimism was very attractive to a child. I'm sure that my parents were frustrated, but I was enthralled. It is hard to square all that with what I know now. It is still hard for me to believe that Reagan did the Iran-Contra thing. Even though it is true. I guess that child sticks with us for some time.

6. My dad would tell me about Nicaragua and Iran/Contra etc.. and I'd watch
the news - pictures of Nuclear Missiles and Russian subs, etc - we all felt WW3 was right around the corner - but I'd watch his speeches by myself and slowly, subtly forget my rage and hatred and my conscience and swallow his verbal prozac.

Maybe this means conservatives are the equivalent of 10 year olds

7. LOL
Verbal prozac for people with the minds of 10 year olds. That's good. It is hard for W to lull you into thinking everything is going to be okay. "Uh, Uh, you know freedom. We are free loving people, Yeah, yeah". He's like Beavis. Even when he's right, he makes you think the sky is falling.

One thing I do respect about Reagan, if only in comparison to W, is that there was no punishment for hating him. With this White House, not only do they expect you to buy their crap, but they expect you to like it. If you ask even one question you are un-American. I guess Reagan must have spend enough time in Hollywood to have some respect for dissenting opinions and the fact that dissent comes from people. I think Bush has been around ideologues of one persuasion for so long he thinks dissenters are another species. Or as he puts it, focus groups.

4. Nobody ever said he wasn't a great con artist.
That was even more infuriating.

5. He could speak, in contrast to the Chump-In-Chief
Major contrast.

I could understand how people got sucked into the Reagan thing -- he was an actor, after all.

But how can they follow the illiterate, incoherent Bush?
