Florida Vote Officials to Talk Felon List
"
MIAMI (AP) - Many of Florida's local elections supervisors are concerned about the accuracy of a list of 47,000 possible felons to be purged from voter rolls, and they want the state's help in ensuring that no voters are disenfranchised in November.

The summer conference of elections supervisors from Florida's 67 counties opens Monday in Key West. The list is expected to be a hot topic, in part because CNN recently filed a lawsuit seeking access to it.

"We know the outcome of using inaccurate lists," said Ion Sanchez, Leon County supervisor of elections. "The outcome is that legal voters are disenfranchised."

The issue is particularly sensitive because in the 2000 presidential election George W. Bush was declared the winner by just 537 votes after five weeks of recounts and challenges in Florida."

1. Hey, here's a thought...
How about not disenfranchising ex-convicts in the first place? I mean, sure, while someone is in prison or on probation, perhaps they shouldn't be voting. But where does any state get off saying that someone who has done their time, paid their penalty, should nonetheless be excluded from exercising constitutional rights?

Seriously, what sort of argument is there for doing this? Once a sentence is served, the ex-convict should have all rights (except, possibly the right to own a gun) restored to him. What justification could there possibly be for creating a permanent disenfranchisement? I say that there is none. This is one of many injustices practiced by our so-called justice system.

5. I think it all goes back to the quote: A conservative is a liberal who's
been mugged, and a liberal is a conservative who's been arrested.

3. I certainly hope the media checks the harbor to determine
the quality of the transportation which our public servants took to get down to the Keys. Wouldn't be one bit suprised to find a cocktail party or two which gets out of hand.

4. A local columnist (Frank Cerabino, Palm Beach Post) said:
"In a related story, I will allow the Internal Revenue Service to review my future tax returns in my home -- but under no circumstances will anybody be permitted to make copies."

He is making fun of the FL rule that said reporters could look at the felon list, but not take it or make copies.

Cerabino rules!
