N.Y. Times Photographs of Bush & Kerry: The Tally
Edited on Sun Jun-06-04 11:51 PM by elf
In the month of May, 2004, the NY Times ran 23 photographs of John Kerry and 21 photographs of George Bush. The total area of Kerry’s photographs was 522 square inches and the Bush photos measured 482 square inches.

Kerry’s “Photo Quality Rating” is 90 compared to Bush’s 34, or an almost three times advantage for Kerry. The Quality Rating times the picture size is 1875 for Kerry and 1154 for Bush, or 62% to 38%. There were 10 excellent photos of Kerry (rating 5 or better, see rating system, below) and 6 of Bush. In addition there were zero photos of Kerry with a negative rating, while there were 4 negative photos of Bush. (A negative rating occurs when the four factors of the quality rating scale add up to less than zero. In other words, they make the subject look dopey.)

2. The quality rating thing may have something to do with
the fact that other than Ohio's Bob Taft, Dubya is one of the most resolutely unphotogenic public figures of the last quarter century. He grimaces, smirks, has tics, you name it -- holds his body in awkward positions, stumbles. Kerry's got grace of carriage, and he's photogenic.

17. Kerry needs to use this in an ad
i'm not sure what the context should be. but this pic and footage of the flight suit should be used in an ad against bush.

3. Great. Give Republicans ammunition for the
liberal media myth to be perpetuated. </sarcasm>

Really though...it's about damned time they show the truth and the truth is the editors are mostly likely having to work triple overtime to find positive things for Bush.

6. how do you tell a good Bush photo from a bad one
He looks bad in EVERY photo. And I'm not just saying that as a partisan, but someone with fully functioning eyeballs.

8. This is great
I have yet to see a "good" picture of GWB, with his asymmetrical facial features, eye squint, smirking, etc. I have been baffled by occasional descriptions of him, in the media, or by my misguided Republican friends, as dashing or (ugh) handsome. I feel he looks as if he's in a continual state of confusion, due to his being in waaay over his head as US president.

11. They sweat bullets, when they put him out in public!
and try to avoid it as much as possible.

I think he knows what people think about his speeches and appearance. He is getting more and more insecure and makes more and more mistakes!

I'm just leaning back and wait for the big one!!!!!!!!!!

12. Bush never goes out in public and rarely has a press conference. All his..
...other appearances are almost the exact same set up (the kind they show on Letterman). He doesn't really give the photographers much to work with.

Kerry tends to come up with pretty photogenic moments, and he's got all those different suits and shirts, and he's always doing something interesting.

But I'm still surprised Kerry has the edge over Bush in anythign that has to do with the NYT.
