A Republican response to Reagan
I just received this via email:

===

As a republican who once worked to get Reagan elected I applaud your honesty. Strange you say? Not really when you realize that it was Reagan that actually caused the divide within the party and country that exists today. The final straw for me was when he decided to cut federal support for hot lunch programs for poor children. If children are hungry they cannot learn.

And that was just the beginning of what he did to this country....no, we won't even go to John Poindexter's poignant rendition of Elmer Fudd and his ruinous approach to destroying our natural resources.

Don't get me wrong. I feel terrible that he died the way that he did....but if you think about it....could it be that he was reaping the seeds that he sowed for the lives that his polices ruined?

Just a question.

Sign me ... an open minded individual who is SICK and TIRED of party politics and the willingness of this country to hand over its youth for an ill-conceived "war".

From where I stand... iraq does equal vietnam.

2. That took some guts to write...
...even if he didn't sign his name. :-)

Many people are hesitant to be so critical of their own party leaders. My hat's off to him.

4. She sounds like
an old-style republican, if she still thinks school lunches are a good idea. I wish there were more like her for us to deal with right now.

I thought your piece was what needed to be written: well-argued without hyperbole.

8. Yes, I remember the school lunch fiasco. I also remember when our
teachers were puzzled and reprimanded the student body for "cheering" when they announced over our loud speaker that Reagan had been shot.

I grew up in an area deeply affected by Reaganomics.

I won't dance on his grave.

But, I won't applaud him as a great leader who united our nation either.

10. I would expect
that there are many out there who feel this way but will not write. Because you wrote this piece with facts and without venom it is much easier for real conservatives to see the truth in it. Very well done, Will.

11. Reagan was a F-*@!%#@!!! fraud..
and the repubs have been busy re-writing history since the 80's. The bastard was obviously suffering from Alzheimer's while still in the white house in his second term. Nancy's press release was very careful to state that his disease started in 1994. WHAT BULLSHIT.

FUCK Reagan. he severely damaged this country and now has airports and aircraft carriers named after him. Next we'll see his head on a coin and a Washington mall monument I suppose.. If I ever see his goddamn head on a coin there's going to be a lot of defaced coinage coming out of my pockets and back into circulation!!

14. One of the sickest things to come out of the Puke party
was the idea of cutting hot lunches for poor children. I had a few of those reduced price lunches. You can tell her that older people who got government commodities also got those taken away quite handily.

Stealing food from the mouths of poor children and the elderly. That crap is a blemish on all of America, and makes Ebenezer Scrooge look like a sweet old philanthropist. For shame!

From me, Will, tell this lady that I admire the fact that her heart is warm enough to be disgusted. If Repubs like her would take back their party, it would be a nicer world in which to live.

22. Ahhh the memories
Edited on Mon Jun-07-04 03:18 PM by BeFree
I had forgotten about the end of hot lunches for poor destitute children who through no fault of their own were denied basic human needs.

Yes, this weekend on DU was a stroll down memory lane. Liars, and Tightwads and Bears, oh my! On a yellow prick road (yellowed by the trickle down from above) full of potholes of prisons full of non-criminal, non-violent, non-injurious friends caught up in the just-say-no, war on drugs.

Yes, the Raygun highway as we now know it, where upon one had to begin for the first time, to watch what they say, lest they be wired or fired, or fried in the boiling bowl of reaganite.

I hadn't missed those days. Hadn't even thought of them for years and years. But the grand event this weekend brought them all rushing back like the nightmare they were.

Through the next several days, weeks, and months, I am sure ya'll will continue to remind us of the horribly awful truth of the reign of that asshole who took food from the mouths of hungry babes.

Remind us, and keep reminding us, so that we can beware, and keep such crap from happening again.

27. I t appears that Americans are beginning to realize that
right and left isn't about party politics anymore, but about saving our country. Let's hope more deluded, but honest, conservatives realize they are really backing a fascist style regime, not just a party who believes in less government, fewer taxes and white people being in charge because they are better managers (So many conservatives, who are otherwise not racist, really believe this). Let's hope more of them wake up.
