Has anyone else notice the hight cost of food these days?
I mentioned before on this board how I paid about $2.00 more per pound for my steak the last time I bought some, and just yesterday I paid 1.49 per pound for apples that are usually .99 per pound. What is going on? I think inflation is rearing its ugly head.

1. The steak prices could be related to the low carb diets---
Supply vs.demand.

I read last winter that this would happen.

7. I had heard they would plummet after the mad cow scare and evidence
showing that more mad cow exists in the US than the USDA or DHHS will ever admit.

2. The excuse is the higher gas prices (adds to shipping)
which certainly counts for some of it... but 50 cents an apple... sometimes having an excuse to raise prices gives nice cover for pumping up profits.

13. could be... I read the post, however
to read that the price just now spiked... don't think the off season for apples (and scarcity) just hit within the last week or so... But then I could be misreading the post (doesn't put a time frame to "usually" per the lower price) in which case your explanation makes sense.

4. The rising gas prices are partially to blame.
It costs more for the items to get to market than it did and the price is passed on to us. However, I still haven't read where the hike in milk prices came from. It might have been posted here but if it was I didn't see it and I haven't seen an answer anywhere else.

5. Stealth Inflation
If I recall (DUers with better information can correct me)Food and energy prices are excluded from the "core" inflation rates because of their volatility. Hence...if food prices go up it's not Really inflation.

I think as agrabusinesses own more and more of the American food supply we can expect a future of high prices for everything we eat. I
m vegetarian and sometimes cant afford fresh fruits and vegetables. Big business in this country thinks that the Americans wallets are limitless. The price of everything has gone up up up.

9. Higher prices for meat & eggs are probably due to low carb
diets and cheese and everything else made from milk is due to an increase in milk prices.

The other problem is the rise in gas prices.

So, poor people are just screwed. Most need their car to get to work and on top of that, they have to spend more money to feed their families.

I've reduced my driving to a bare minimum. I am only buying the bare essentials. I also have reduced my intake of milk products, which will decrease my calcium intake.

And I've planted some veggies and already harvested some squash and cucumbers. This will help me with the rising veggie prices.

How do poor families who have young children cope? Milk is essential for the growth of kids.

This is so disgusting.

12. Milk Also Went Up
After the dairy farmers got a price increase of $.50 per hundred pounds of milk, the dairy industry jacked up their prices quite a bit also.

16. The Bushevik Ministry of Economy will show you the error of your ways
Please stay where you are until a representative from the SS comes and transports you to Gitmo, where you will be "enlightened", treasonous liberal.

17. Industrial agriculture is heavily petroleum-dependent
It takes oil, and a lot of it, to process the fertilizers, run the farm equipment, and process the crops (the majority of which aren't ready-to-eat crops but those needing processing like corn, soy and wheat).

When you talk about steaks, you're only amplifying the oil needed several times over.

And then, you can factor in the oil needed to ship the food thousands of miles so that we can eat fresh strawberries in January or corn in March.

When the cost of oil goes up, it is only natural that the price of food goes up. If anything, hopefully this will point out the deep, real problems with our current centralized agricultural model, and encourage us to move to more sustainable methods.

19. Food is definitely going up
My grocery bill used to be about $100 every two weeks -- now it's usually closer to $150. I'm not buying different things, either.

20. Mad cow & currency
Food prices have been stable in Canada (except beef, still high), but US dollar has slipped against C$ and peso, so imported produce is costlier while demand for US produce has increased (thanks to stronger loonie, California strawberries are just $2.99/lb- yummy). I would expect the restrictions on Canadian beef at the US border have pushed prices higher because of the reduced supply.
