A sick video. . .this is the type of stuff Bill Cosby was talking about
http://hot97.com/av/video/exclusives/slapfest-day8.asx

Just so you know Emmis is the radio company that owns the MANCOW SHOW are you surprised.

For those of you who don't want to watch its a hip hop station (HOT97) that is having a contest for concert tickets and $1,000. To win the money and tickets two women have to smack each other. This is the type of shit Cosby was talking about. As a hip hop fan and a Black man I hang my head in shame.

If you would like to let the powers of EMMIS know how you feel have at it.

1. What is wrong with people? Smacking each other to win something?
Beyond sad.

51. Not as bad as eating worms to win $50,000...
Or whatever. Even I'd eat worms for 50k.

And hey, maybe if you're the type of person who would engage in a smacking contest to win something, then you're the type of person who deserves a good smack!!

See how the universe rights itself?

2. EMMIS is owned by a wealthy Democrat in Indiana.
I'll try to find his name.

Also, MANCOW is a WHITE-WING David Duke Style Bigot.

Seig Heil to him! :puke:

Yes, I agree with Bill Cosby, this stuff is OVER THE LINE!!!

7. thanks...as a black woman, i don't feel the least bit of shame
Edited on Mon Jun-07-04 01:54 PM by noiretblu
there is no way on earth i am going to feel bad about every stupid thing a black person does. i understand what cosby meant, but i am sick of the notion that we aren't as human (that includes being as stupid) as everyone else. not all black people will ever adopt or live up to cosby's middle-class expectations.
but i will send an email.

9. Thank you for this insight.
I really appreciate it, because your perspective is something I rarely encounter.

I personally don't think that what Bill Cosby, or anyone parallel with him on the "white" side of this issue, said means that other people should be guilty for, or feel bad about, everything any another member of their ethnic group does. I, for example, though I am horrified by the religious hypocrisy of the "right wing", do not feel guilty about them. I am concerned about being identified with them though, because I am white.

Maybe what Cosby and others are calling for is "no fear" when it comes to the truth of what we feel and think about those with whom we share some kind of identity.

13. what i hear is "black pathology"
Edited on Mon Jun-07-04 02:24 PM by noiretblu
and while i know cosby is a lot more liberal and sophistocated than some who love this theory on the right, his version still sounds a lot like it. unlike some on the right, i trust that cosby understands that this theory is really only a part of the issue of poverty and racism in america.
and the other truth: cosby doesn't really share an idenitity with the people he was talking about, and neither did his NAACP audience...they share only skin color. the gap between black haves and have nots, are not just economic in nature, they are cultural as well.

24. It appears to me, on an average, the whole thing is more about
social economic class, than it is about race. I am just as self-conscious around wealthy people of color as I am around rich white people, because I know the differences in our values, and hence, feel that my existence has no justification in their eyes.

There are exceptions to the class characteristics of course, i.e. poor whites who have the political values of the wealthy, which can include things like bigotry, which poor whites may experience as racism, while wealthy bigotry may be more of a purely class issue.

37. exactly...that's why cosby's comments to the NAACP audience
were not meant for the people in that audience. they could amen and shake their heads in agreement because he wasn't talking about them or their children. it is about class, and i understand what you mean about having to justify your existence.

. . .but you have to understand that this SMACKFEST is a popular feature on HOT97 (one of the top and influential HIP HOP stations in the country) so there are tons of kids everyday who hear this crap and then believe it to be acceptable. Its not speaking for anybody but it sure can influence a ton of people.
