Lou Dobbs to compare Reagan with Thomas Jefferson
based on a new book. The author will be his guest after the commercial break.

Let's see -- Reagan liked to be driven by black men, whereas Jefferson liked to ride black women.

2. The two are wholly incomparable.
If Jefferson were alive today, he would be castigated by the right-wing and branded a communist.

20. maybe not - perhaps a deist, and indeed he died as a churched Christain!
Edited on Mon Jun-07-04 06:21 PM by papau
The Jefferson Bible is the life of Christ sans miracles - which Jefferson used as his touchstone for his life.

But there are those that claim all the above was for show and that he was an atheist.

But this is a discussion that does not fit into the "political" GD concept.

:-)

3. One of the hosts on Good Day Live
Was trying to quote Reagan and said that during a debate with Mondale he quipped, "I met Thomas Jefferson and you are no Thomas Jefferson." I almost fell off my seat laughing. I mean how stupid can any one person be?

4. The reporter messed up
It was 1992 and it was Clinton. It also was a speech not a debate.

8. As much as I disliked Reagan,
he was an excellent politician.

He was belittling Clinton while at the same time poking fun at himself. He made his criticism of Clinton sound good natured. We were so fortunate that Clinton was just as gifted a politician as Reagan was.

Anyway, what Reagan said was that Clinton thought he was a Jefferson, but that Reagan had met Jefferson (Reagan was poking fun at how old he was) and Clinton was no Jefferson.

18. thats funny.
I seem to remember some republican saying something like that (I thought it was Bob Dole actually). But thats actually quite a funny statement, and I don't think that would be insulting at all to Clinton.

21. He was only trying to do a Lloyd Bentsen during the debate w/Quale.
"I knew Jack Kennedey, and you're no Jack Kennedy." when Quayle tried to compare himself to JFK. It was a priceless moment, and as usual, Reagan is stealing someone's else's creativity and ideas and trying to make them his own. Another fine example of his phoneyness and lack of class.

10. "You, sir, are no Jack Kennedy."

"I knew Jack Kennedy, and you, sir, are no Jack Kennedy."

That was Dukakis' VP (what was his *name*! <thumps head on desk>)
to Dan Quayle in a VP candidates' debate in 1988.

Regarding the floating head's statement: did he really quote Reagan as saying "I met Thomas Jefferson . . ." If these natter-show people weren't so thick, I'd almost think it was a subtle dig at Reagan's age.

On edit: I honestly don't remember that Reagan made that Thomas Jefferson statement. What were the circumstances? Wasn't that about the time when Reagan announced that he had Alzheimer's?

19. I found the quote..
Reagan speech 8/17/92, referring to Bill Clinton (with veiled reference to Lloyd Bentson's comment to Dan Quayle during the 1988 VP debate; also after joking about his (Reagan's) advanced age): All right. Listen to me. This fellow they've nominated claims he's the new Thomas Jefferson. Well, let me tell you something. I knew Thomas Jefferson. He was a friend of mine. And, governor, you're no Thomas Jefferson.

9. What's with this insufficiently exalted comparison?
As a staunch Republican, I demand that he be compared only with Lincoln, Washington, Mahatma Ghandi, and Jesus. Oh, Buddha too, if you must. But only to point out how much better Reagan was than Buddha. Buddha never proposed an anti-missile defense shield.

I think everyone ought to be required to keep a Reagan photo--no, a Reagan shrine in the corner of a room in their house. Anyone who doesn't would be fined, jailed, or in obstinate cases, taken out and shot.

ALL currency should carry an image of the Gipper. Not just US currency either, but everyone else's too. Or we'll nuke the disrespectful bastards.

Let's see, what else. Oh, yeah, and Nancy should voluntarily accompany him into his mausoleum, there to be interred alive like the wives of Egyptian Pharaohs. Least she can do.

I think that covers it for now. I'll weigh in with some more excellent ideas later. Have to go masturbate now.

16. One of the Smartest presidents vs. one of the dumbest -- uhhh NO.
I mean how much more DIFFERENT can these two be? Thomas Jefferson was almost a completely non-religious intellectual. How the heck does he compare to Reagan - a conservative former-actor other than a complete contrast?
