Bush Declares A Day Of National Mourning for Reagan
Please correct me if I am not accurate in asserting that this may be the first time that there has been a presidential decree proclaiming a “national day of mourning” for a FORMER president which has been declared a “federal holiday”! I am not “into” making chide comments about the life and political effects that Ronald Reagan exhibited or imposed upon those who lived in the world at the time of his influence. I am not “into” hateful perspectives of what he did, or didn’t do during his presidency of the “Actor’s Guild”, “Governor of California”, or, as “President of the United States”. I do believe that the only favorable legislation that he passed that meant much to me was when he changed “Daylight Savings Time” to the “first Sunday of April” ! Public Law 99-359 in 1986 was a significant piece of legislation for those who suffer from SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder). Now! I am being half serious at this point, but, as a “single issue”, it meant a great deal to me.

Now! This Friday, President Bush has declared that the U.S. government will shut down “in honor of former President Ronald Reagan”.

Please correct me if I am not in accordance with historical precedence, but, when was the last time that an “EX” president was so honored. Let me see. Herbert Hoover died on October 20th, 1964; I don’t remember a Federal Holiday being declared. Let me see. Dwight Eisenhower died on March 28, 1969; I don’t remember a Federal Holiday being declared. Let me see. Harry Truman died on December 26, 1972; I don’t remember a Federal Holiday being declared. Let me see. Lyndon Johnson died on January 22, 1973; I don’t remember a Federal Holiday being declared.

NOW! I work for the government! I have been told that I will have Friday, June 11, 2004 off. My understanding is that I will be paid via “Administrative Leave”. Hmmmm! I really don’t know what the circumstances are as they relate to ALL Federal Employees, but, it certainly seems as though there is a lot of money that MAY be being paid for this tribute.

Please understand, I hope that this does not turn into a “spiteful” and “hateful” anti-Reagan thread. I would rather observe comments of the “hypocrisy” of Bush Declaration!

Thank you for your time. Peace! May the force be with you! Live long and prosper! And, don’t forget to be nice!

12. he *still* hasn't done anything for me by that standard
unless our Replicant party governor of Texas follows the rest of the pious and sets us loose for the day---I'd be surprised. Very surprised. Its a state that has become long on talk and short on action.

6. This isn't just any President...
...Reagan is a Republican Deity! No doubt his face will be on the $10 bill, his birthday will be made a national holiday (to counteract the liberal's MLK b'day holiday), the District of Columbia will be renamed the District of Reagan, and the entire interstate highway system will be renamed after him and Nancy.

I'm a government employee who will be more than happy to take the day off Friday. I'll stay home and write donation checks to Democratic politicians and websites like MoveOn.org and BuzzFlash. Bwahahahahahahahahahahahahaha! Thanks, George!

10. Administrative Leave?
Does that mean they are going to dock everyone a day out of their earned sick time?

11. Polk gave 'em a half day off for Jackson in 1844
or 45 can't remember off-hand which July it was but...Polk did close the offices down---by the way, I am almost 100% sure there was no pay for that generous gesture...

13. I haven't worked for the government, but I don't recall such a day
of mourning being called ever either. I'll bet there wasn't even a day off when Kennedy was buried.
