Bush Didn't Order Any Breach of Torture Laws, Ashcroft Says
By NEIL A. LEWIS

Published: June 8, 2004

ASHINGTON, June 8 — Attorney General John Ashcroft, whose subordinates have written confidential legal memorandums seemingly approving of torture, told a Senate committee today that President Bush had "made no order that would require or direct the violation" of either the international treaties or domestic laws prohibiting torture.

Appearing before the Senate Judiciary Committee, Mr. Ashcroft was assailed with questions about a cascade of recently disclosed memorandums in which lawyers from his Department as well as those from the Defense Department and elsewhere in government provided legal justifications for using torture in interrogating people detained in the fight against terrorism.

1. The Committee really clobberdd Ashcroft today. Contempt of Congress
may be charged. He sounded like a fool. He is an evil, evil man. I find far too many Christians very hateful and untruthful and hypocritical.

2. But that isn't what he was asked!
I just saw the clip. CNN is playing 10 seconds of Ashcroft's "outrage" to every 1 of the dems', but that is another story. In the clip I just saw, Ashcroft was asked if HIS DEPARTMENT issued any opinion saying Bush had great latitude, and he answered that BUSH DID NOT ISSUE any such order or whatever he called it. It was an obvious unchallenged sidestep.
