Bill Parcells felt he could make a racial slur because of *...
...* and his minions have worked to dehumanize entire groups of people. It is because the leadership of this country says it is ok to torture prisoners that the people of this country think it is ok to utter slurs about whatever people are different from them. Remeber when the wingnuts said that Clinton set a poor example for our children? Well young people were having sex both before and after Clinton but as far as I have seen there has been no increase in incidents of public sex among our populace. I think perhaps there has been an increase in public racism and the * administration has set the tone for it.

How about I remember when this happened and expected others here at DU to do the same. I posted this because I am blessed with something called free thought. It enables me to form ideas concerning events of the day and then postulate about them. The right wing was not blessed with this and thus are forced to listen to windbags like Rush and Hannity to tell them what to think.

Since I saw it on Sportscenter, I interface with technology in multiple ways. Sure, I could go research espn.com to get the exact link, but I'm encouraging you to step away from your screen on occasion. Look at the other screen. Michelle Tafoyn is hot.

Edited on Tue Jun-08-04 11:36 PM by meluseth
If that's what you mean by the "other screen." But it was just by accident, because I live in the DFW Metroplex, and was trying to find the weather. Otherwise, I would never have known about this story at all--like 99.9% of DUers, apparently.

The problem was that your original post did not even identify the "racial slur" you were (justifiably) so perturbed about--if you didn't want to provide a link, why didn't you at least inform people of what Parcells actually said that was a slur?

I don't watch sports, don't watch Sportscenter, have no idea who Michelle Tafoyn is, nor do I intend to spend a single solitary second worrying about it.

14. Oh, boy. Sports Center. That wonderful source of current events.
Perhaps you should step off your high horse for a moment, as this self-righteous bullshit you're spewing isn't going to win you any friends, especially considering the whacked out premise of your initial post.

Bill Parcells couldn't care less about GWB and if you knew anything about history, you'd understand where the slur originated in the first place. It pre-dates the chimp in the White House which makes it a little difficult to blame on him. Besides, people will use racial slurs regardless of the political climate initiated by the Bush Administration.

In addition, not everyone spends every waking moment glued to Sports Center, nor do most people give a shit about Bill Parcells in the first place. Therefore, expecting everyone to read your mind and follow the misguided leap of logic you made about a story on which the ink is still wet isn't terribly realistic.

Lastly, your Sports Center obsession obviously hasn't done you any good, since you can't even spell Michele Tafoya correctly.

Alas, we really thought you'd be smarter than that.

Give the guy a break. You are slinging slurs as quickly as a republican radical. We Democrats should tolerate others watching and participating in sports. We are not the party of the intolerant.

Use a variety of media and stop insulting others who do watch TV, listen to the radio, read, visit museums, attend meetings, and go to sports events.

I'm surprised you weren't censored for a personal attack. Go read some facts in my later post and be friendlier to your fellow DU'er.

60. Pot, meet kettle.
Personal attacks? Oh, you mean like "republican radical"?

You are too funny.

Or do you mean personal attacks like the original poster inferring that everyone else is stupid and mindless?

"I am blessed with something called free thought"

and

"I expect us to be smarter"

are pretty condescending, don't you think?

Next time, actually READ the posts before you chastise someone for their responses. This has nothing to do with watching TV and it has nothing to do with sports.

The poster referenced a very recent event like it happened months ago ("I remember when this happened and expected others here at DU to do the same" like he was referring to the Plame leak story and not a story that happened literally hours before).

He then expected everyone to agree with his theory that Bush caused Parcells to use a racial slur.

When they didn't jump right on the bandwagon, the poster chastised them, inferring that they were incapable of free thought and that they weren't as smart as he was.

Do you not see how ridiculous that is? He chastised people for not knowing the intricate details of a story that had just starting getting press, yet he couldn't be bothered to spell Michele Tafoya's name correctly.

It seems that one shouldn't chastise people for missing details of a story if you can't be bothered with details yourself.

Oh, but bad me. I should have been friendlier to the guy who thinks he's better than the rest of us and the only one capable of free thought. No, thanks.

Not to mention that the whole premise of his initial post (that Bush caused Parcells to use a racial slur) is ludicrous in the first place.

Bush deserves blame for a lot of things. The rantings of a football coach (who has since apologized - the sincerity of said apology could be debated) in his 60's who used a slur that's been unacceptable for decades is not one of them.

...First of all , please allow me to excuse myself for setting a high standard for progressive thinkers and progressive thought. I would expect that all progressives would want to aspire to my expectations and not drag us down to a lowest common denominator. Surely with a little effort we ALL can reach that great height.

Just to set the record straight the purpose of my post was to point out that the racial intolerance shown by this administration has permeated our society to such an extent that small minded people who use the descriptive words uttered by Parcells, because it helps them to feel superior to other races, now feel they can state them in a public forum without fear of backlash. OK they were wrong. Still that thought is harbored by many Continuously Uninformed people who post at different websites. This entire thread is beyond their ability to reason but it shouldn't be beyond ours.

Trying to prove your opinion is superior by pointing out a typo???? Again don't be like the Continuosly Uninformed. That is all of the time that is worth.

Last, and because I am not a saint though I strive to be one each day: Speakers imply, listeners infer.

On edit: I thought the person asking for a link wanted a link to freepers feigning concern about Clinton and their kids thinking sex was ok. I didn't have one and did not feel inclined to look for it. I expected we all could remember it. Never assume.

NFL won't fine Parcells for comments

03:38 PM CDT on Tuesday, June 8, 2004
By MATT MOSLEY / DallasNews.com

Cowboys coach Bill Parcells will not be fined for the racially insensitive remarks that he made Monday, according to NFL vice president of public relations Greg Aiello.

Parcells, who was discussing how assistant coach Sean Payton likes to insert trick plays, said, "Sean's going to have a few – no disrespect to the Orientals – but what we call 'Jap' plays. OK? Surprise things."

41. Racist? I think not
I run into this all the time (being black). What he said IMO was stupid and pretty insensitive. The word itself may carry racial baggage, so to speak. But the real issue is did he have racist intent in making the remark? Seems clear that he did not. What I bump into is white people often using racist-type references, but not directly making racist remarks.

For example, I was told that when something isn't fixed properly, its "nigger-rigged." Or that a bunch of one dollars bills is called a "nigger-roll." This seems analogous to what Parcells has said. I honestly haven't seen fit to call that kind of language racist, because its passed from person to person - until it finally drips from the mouth of some idiot who has never been around "niggers," never seen a black man roll one dollar bills, and just thinks the saying is kinda cool. Those people, unlike Freepers for example, can be educated.

As late as my 20s, I used to say I got "gyped." I had never met a gypsy in my entire life and still haven't. I learned. I wasn't consciously thinking ill of gypsies, it was just a saying. That sort of ignorance can be corrected easily. Racist? I think not. Dumb? That sounds more accurate to me.

43. The word "Jap" is an unmitigated racial slur ...
You're trying to defend the indefensible. His purported ignorance is not a defense; people who use such words must be called on it. If it goes unchecked, then people can start thinking they can say "Jap" anytime they want. (And he knew he was saying something off-color because he prefaced it by saying, "No offense intended ..." He knew it was offensive.)

You say you're a black person who bumps into white people who use racist-type references that aren't directly racist, like "nigger-rigged." Huh? Just because there is no apparent intention (according to you), that makes it OK? Language obviously carries a lot of meaning; words and phrase perpetuate prejudices and stereotypes. Everybody knows that "nigger" is a racial slur of the worst kind. How can that ever be used innocently? You give an example that "nigger-rigged" means that something isn't fixed properly. But it's implying that a "nigger" is someone who can't fix something properly. How can that be seen as innocent of racism?

Sorry, but I won't apologize for people's use of racial slurs. That's just giving succor to racists everywhere. Racism, in part, stems from ignorance, and that ignorance must be exposed.

When someone says "gypped," you might want to correct that person gently. But if that person says, "No disrespect to my Roma friends, but I got gypped on that deal," then you know that s/he was aware.

A euphemistic way of saying nigger-rigged popular amongst actual racists trying to appear clever is "Afro-American Engineered". No, it's not a result of the "PC" speech backlash but has been around since I heard it first in the latter 1970s.

I had actually forgotten both the original and the euphemistic versions until some jag-off used the term a couple of years ago. Man, I was pissed when I realized I would probably never have the luxury of forgetting them again.

The word is considered a racial slur by any educated person. And Parcells KNEW the term was a slur, because he tried to deflect criticism by saying no offense was intended.

So if a white person uses those terms to your face, you just smile? Or do you correct them?

69. I flip out
of course! As I said, if its just ignorance, that can be corrected. I always always always make it real plain (real quick) that I don't tolerate off-color stupid comments about blacks, gays jews or anyone else. That usually solves the immediate problem. But despite what some think, there is a difference between a racist and guy with a big mouth.

David Duke honestly believes that everyone is inferior to aryans. Does Parcells have an opinion on who is superior to whom? Or was he just using a stupid saying - knowing, as you say, that it was stupid?

In a few days, Parcells will get a clue. If not, one will be given to him. David Duke? He is never going to change, because he is so tied to those beliefs that no amount of evidence will cure him.

Surely you must see a difference.

But he used a racial slur, knowing it was a racial slur--we have no way of knowing if he is a racist, or has some issues with people of Asian descent, other than by what he says out loud, in public, where other people can hear him--we can't read his mind. And if he is, nothing is going to change him, either.

Email, chats, and forums are easy places for misunderstandings to occur. 90% of our communication is nonverbal. So please to prevent some of these rants from members in the future, try just a few more words. For example, you said "Link"
Did you need a link for the original comment, links to the growing use of racially intolerant language throughout our media, links to the meaning of the term "Jap" or a direct link to TN al's convoluted brain and the way he puts facts together. Now that would be a scary thought. The point is he may have wanted to discuss the administrations creating an environment of intolerance and not wanted to focus on the stupidity of Bill.

25. the Tuna
Look, I'm not defending that the Tuna was wrong for using
'oriental' and 'jap' in the public arena but he apologized
twice and a Japanese reporter who was in the room wasn't
even offended. Case in point:

IRVING, Texas (AP)
Akira Kuboshima, editor of American Football Magazine in Japan, said he wasn't offended, though he knows many Japanese will be.

"There is a lot of chance for someone to feel offended," Kuboshima said. "To me, it was no big deal."

Parcells spoke to Kuboshima, offering what the reporter perceived to be an apology. Kuboshima said he was surprised more by the reaction of other reporters than the comment.

Although it might be more PC to call a trick play a “Pearl Harbor”, “Jap” is shorter & easier.
I mean what's next: we can't refer to hard-hitting strong safeties
as 'kamikazes.' I'm sick of PC bullshit and people getting on their
moral high ground for something that isn't a big deal. I'm sure
Parcells has used the term in front of his players, one of them being vietnamese linebacker Dat Nguyen so I guess what I'm saying is that he should keep the term in the locker room since the public can't handle it.

Because Nguyen, the Vietnamese linebacker, could be offended by the term 'oriental.' All people of Asian descent could be offended by 'oriental', could they not?

34. not really
You're wrong. So one black person calling another black person a nigger is a slur? Context matters. I'm not going to explain how nigger is used as a uniting term with blacks because I'm not black and I feel racist doing it but it isn't always a slur.
And I think Parcells using jap for football terminology isn't a big deal either.

How many super bowls have you won? Calling Parcells dumb
is dumb in itself. He's a proven leader and motivator.
What are you saying anyway? An attractive female minority like, for example, Halle Berry using a racial slur isn't offensive and disgusting.

If you consider winning a Super Bowl an indication of superior intelligence, I seriously question your sanity.

If Halle Berry called a member of another race a racial slur, that would be offensive, too.

39. No matter how you want to put it, the word "Jap" ...
is a racial slur on par with "nigger." Being offended by it is not a matter of being "politically correct" or "something that isn't a big deal." If you don't understand that, you're being willfully ignorance or intentionally racist.

It's my hunch that you use words like that all the time.

That's not cool donkey. I think you're referring to me.
I heard the word "jap" used to mean sneak attack until a couple of years ago on the Howard Stern show when aj benza surprise punched stuttering john and stuttering john said he 'japped' me. I have never used the term before or since. Although I did write a paper on japanese internment in college. And don't say I must not have learned anything from writing it because I did. I honestly didn't know how offensive the term "jap" is though probably because I don't use the term. And no, 'nigger' is not a part of my vocabulary either.

24. Is he a hell of a football coach
I'm a student of NFL history and I tend to disagree. He's a "charachter" I'll give you that, but I'm not sure he belongs in the upper echelon of all-time great NFL coaches.

I'd also like to note that Parcells has never won a SB without Bill Belichick as his defensive coordinater yet Belichick has won two without Parcells. Now tell me who's the genius?

33. Yes he is...
I never called Parcells a genius, but he is a great motivator and leader. In the entire history of the NFL, only Parcells and Don Shula have coached two different teams to the Super Bowl. He's old school, his teams commit the fewest penalties and are usually the best disciplined.

You're right though, Belicheck is the best coach in the league right now and will go down as one of the greats.

Edited on Wed Jun-09-04 01:30 AM by japanduh
We were in a war with the Chinks and the Gooks, them sneaky commies. So its ok by me if he names sneaky or cheesy plays with those racial slurs. How about "Guido Shotgun"? Or better yet "Spic Hail Mary".

I got mugged by a black person once, so that justifies me in calling a wad of dollar bills a "nigger-roll". Whats the big deal, right?

62. This site amazes me sometimes
You can go two forums over and find people hearing about the murders of Jews and saying things like, "Live by the sword/die by the sword" and more or less calling for the eradication of Israel. And no one blinks.

But someone uses a colloquial expression and it's time to pull out Hate Crime laws.

64. that's utter crap--nobody is calling for the "eradication of Israel"
And it's interesting to know what you consider a "colloquial expression." Once upon a time, the n-word was considered just a colloquial expression, so hey, why would anyone today get worked up over it. So it's okay to use the term "Jewed down?" Why don't you go ask some of your Jewish friends what they think of it?

These are slurs--since you are probably a white male, I doubt you have ever been the victim of one, or the entire social and cultural structure of racism and discrimination such slurs express.

Talk about amazing, jesus.

Have I used the word "Jewed" before. Probably. I've defintely heard it. Should I have said it? No.

But, like I said, I think some people look to be offended. And if Parcells calling a football play a "jap play" is where we are in the fight against racism, then I think we need to have a parade.

Now, if you will excuse me, the Coke machine gyped me and I have to call up the wiseguys who run the vening machine business around here.

Edited on Wed Jun-09-04 07:29 PM by meluseth
Without changing racist language, which reflects racist attitudes and behavior, then there is indeed little left to discuss. One hundred years ago, the n-word was so common, and considered such a "colloquial expression," that it was routinely used in books and newspapers and daily speech--and those people who used that word thought nothing of lynching black human beings. Just like too many Americans think nothing of killing "towel heads" or "sand n_____."

is absurd. There have been far more hate crimes committed in the U.S. against Muslims.

52. why Jap is offensive
As a child, I visited a fort in Iowa (not known for being PC) where I learned the difference between Nippon and Japan, Nip and Jap. Let's get educated.
Democrats make mistakes also, see this link where Franken screwed up:
http://www.jacl.org/current_prs/040224.html

Jap was truly offensive to people who called their country Nippon (land of the rising sun,...) I've read many versions of country name online. By using the Chinese pronunciation or mispronunciation, America devalued a country's identify to more easily vilify a nation and allow themselves to tolerate abuses by their government (internment of those with Japanese ancestors).

Here is one point of view as to why Jap is offensive. Be warned. I do not agree with everything on this site, but since DU has some members who have to see links for everything, you'll get them:
http://www.yforum.com/race471.html

Your point was that Bush's administration set an example of tolerance for the intolerable - torture, racism, violation of human rights. During Clinton's administration people learned to tolerate marital affairs, sex with cigars, and blow jobs with young co-workers. I know which one I think is worse.

Bill Parcell is a total jerk. He knew the phrase was wrong before he said it and that makes it worse. He chose the phrase. He was wrong. He should fix it. No stupid attempts to lesson the insult before he makes it. We should not tolerate this or excuse it.

Where does the word Japan come from? http://www.etymonline.com/j1etym.htm
Japan - 1577, via Port. Japao, Du. Japan, acquired in Malacca from Malay Japang, from Chinese jih pun "sunrise" (equivalent of Japanese Nippon), from jih "sun" + pun "origin." Earliest form in Europe was Marco Polo's Chipangu. Colloquial abbreviation Jap is from 1880, not originally pejorative but became so during World War II. Cultural contact led to japaning "coat with laquer or varnish" (1688), along with japonaiserie (1896, from Fr.), japonica (1819, from variant Japon), etc.
Example: Copyrighted just hours before Congress declared war, "You're A Sap, Mr. Jap" ascended from the ashes of Pearl Harbor and typified music immediately following the attack. The brash lyrics coupled with the Murphy Sisters' buoyant vocals make this Carl Hoff number a hard pill to swallow. More an example of propaganda fluff than chart-topping pop fare, the music industry hastily churned out such material, only to have it forgotten just as quickly by American audiences. Be they harmless banter, scornful commentary, or tasteless stereotypes, musical strikes against Japan abounded and conveyed the jingoism of a country thrust into another world war.
