Anyone remember the DU discussions about torture waaay before Abu Ghraib?
I do. It was after Dershowitz came out saying that torture could be justified in some cases. Just curious whether any DUers who supported torture then have changed their stance?

1. don't know, I remember a thread about him, but don't remember
if it was before the war crimes came out or not. I'm no torture apologist, and while I do have personal reasons for opposing it, I use rational arguments against it on boards such as this. Saying its wrong or immoral usually falls on deaf ears of torture apologists, but saying that the information is ultimately unrealiable and that it is just as easy to decieve to end the torture as to tell the truth, ultimately costing lives of WASPs that it gets through.

5. Yes, it was well before the torture photos hit the mainstream press.
Okay, I found a link. Dershowitz made his comments in March of 2003 and that's what prompted the discussions. So it was over a year ago.

And you're right. Not only is it immoral, it's also largely ineffective.

2. There were DU'ers who supported torture? Yikes.
Wish you hadn't told me that.
Both Richard Jewell and the other guy from Washington state recently released by the FBI after being arrested for "matching" prints in the Madrid bombings, were suspected of terrorism. Both would have been tortured under Dershowitz' "ticking time bomb" scenario. Both were completely innocent.
Dershowitz has absolutely NO credibility, and is in my opinion, a bigot. He only seems to advocate torture of Arabs. Not to mention being such a cowardly wimp (as most bigots are), that he would define being served red wine with fish as "torture".
