Was the 'end' of the 'Cold War' Reagan's big mistake (from his p.o.v)

As this is now being paraded about as Reagan's crowning accomplishment as the conservative answer to FDR, it strikes me that had the Soviet Union not fell, we might very well be characters in 1984 right now. Reagan used communism to get elected and he used it to control. If communism had not fallen, would we have seen the more conservative approaches of the first Bush administration or had eight years of democratic control of our foriegn policy?

Is not the war on terror an attempt to recreate the histaria of anti-communism? It seems that these old dogs dont have new tricks. They know what they need to survive and that is the kind of total control that can only be gained by fear.

With all of the Right-wingers running around bragging about Reagan defeating communism, I wonder how many of them secretely wish they could still point to Russia and silence the country as they try to throw together a Reagan look-alike presidency with all the wrong pieces.

Meanwhile, I think we need to focus more on not falling into the war on terror and allowing them to get the kind of control that Reagan had.
