Welp, this may explain why Ashcroft won't comment on the TORTURE memo
Edited on Wed Jun-09-04 03:23 AM by thebigidea
"As DOJ has made clear in opinions involving the war on al Qaida, the nation's right to self-defense has been triggered by the events of September 11. If a government defendant were to harm an enemy combatant during an interrogation in a manner that might arguably violate criminal prohibition, he would be doing so in order to prevent further attacks on the United States by the Al Qaida terrorist network. In that case, DOJ believes that he could argue that the excutive branch's constiutional authority to protect the nation from attack justified his actions. This national and international version of the right to self-defense could supplement and bolster the government defendant's individual right."
- from that leaked memo, page 31

Incredible. We can torture, because its in self defense. That beats the crap out of my supposed satire.

1. What is really going on trial is conservative logic.
To be brief, we simply can't accept it when conservatives lower the bar. What they're saying is "Anything goes because it was a time of war. The fact that the President of the United States will not allow himself to be held accountable for any decisions made by subordinates which he has delegated to; the fact that the prisoner abuse occurred because there was a lack of supervision, which is an indication of mismanagement; and the fact that this kind of thinking leads to Auschwitz is irrelevant and immaterial."

Folks, plausible deniability is as old as the Republican party. That's the reason they delegate everything. They believe they can put up a fire wall between them and accountability. We simply cannot accept their logic.

2. or Maher Arar

If Bush approved his deportation to Syria ...

(odd how there's now way of saying it other than "deportation" ... deporting a Canadian citizen to Turkey from a layover in the US ...)

4. After watching Asscrack's testimony yesterday
all I can say is that he is really losing it. The scary part is that he is one of the key people running this country and the man is a total nut cake. The inmates really are in charge of the asylum.

6. What do you mean "losing it"
He never had it in the first place. Why do you think he lost to a dead man? Asskroft needs treatment at an inpatient facility

7. When I was a kid
if someone went around speaking in tongues and ranting about the end of the world all the time, they were a prime candidate for a shot of Thorazine and a straightjack. Now it qualifies you to be a government leader.

8. This is being addressed by Sen. Chris Dodd on Imus
right now. They played some of the Sen. Biden - Ashcroft "discussion." I think that anyone who looks closely at this would agree that there are several people in the administration who need to be impeached. This is as extreme as the extreme left has said all along.

defending Ashcroft. No one who supports the Constitution could.

9. I know I probably shouldn't say this
It always seems to wind up on our local board (Being Stalked by a freeper).
But Asscoughs actions represent the best of the Nazi cause.
He and his little band of Neo’s has done more to stifle free speech and liberty in the last 3 1/2 years here in the U.S than Hitler and Saddam put together.

What amazes me about those who stand up for his antics is the distance they are willing to go in order to support this fascism, What would it take for them to see the inevitable end of this line of logic ?

Concentration Camps ?

10. I have a question about conspiracy theorists and conspiracies?
What is the granddaddy of ALL strange conspiracy theories?

My answer would be, "The Book of Revelations"! So really, who ARE these most devoted "Conspiracy Nuts"? Who are the REAL Conspiracy Nutcases that the GOPers are always bitching about on the cable news shows? My answer to that is, either the GOPers have bought into the most bizarre conspiracy theory in history lock stock and barrel, or they are lying! Some even believe their own lies I think!

My theory is, Bushco's fear of God is totally cosmetic and that their God, is really just a political tool! For sure the GOPers all worship money and personal power above all else!
