1. There is a saying about someone "not being able to run with the big dogs"
Clinton was designated the Big Dog people weren't good enough to "run with".

2. Big Dog is a nickname for people that are larger than life.
And that is Bill Clinton!

6. You are so right!
And remember, he was always saying, "I'll stick with you till the last dog dies." Probably an unfortunate reference to dogfighting, but it definitely got the point across. How sad that he had to be succeeded by such a pathetic pissant.

8. A guy I used to work for had lunch at the same restaurant
in DC where Clinton and others were, as he had business there. He came back and told us this big event and he told us that President Clinton was a very charismatic guy. You don't get too many guys that will compliment another guy.

Clinton is awesome!

4. It's a southernism
about little pups.

"If you can't run with the Big Dogs, stay on the porch."

Repubs are little pubs compared to The Big Dog. LOL! I don't know how he came to be tagged with that. It's cute and accurate though.

9. Another possibility is in the song "Move It On Over"...
...performed by Hank Williams Sr., George Thorogood and many others:

"Move over little dog, a big ol' dog is movin' in"

and "Matchbox" by Carl Perkins:

"Let me be your little dog, baby, till your big dog comes."
