Do you think Reagan's body is really in that casket?
I think it's empty due to security concerns. Who would ever know?

11. You're the third person I've heard ask this question!
My husband and a co-worker don't think it's in there. Who knows? If he's not in there, the taxpayers have paid a lot of money to fly this empty box around; but WHAT ELSE IS NEW?????

26. Was just thinking of all the people waiting in line
Ready to pay tribute, (or whatever it is they do there), to an empty casket. It just seems like something they would do...hoodwink all the poor slobs standing in line.

29. They're SUPPOSED to have a viewing ...
... under the capital dome. So They'd best have a corpse to show.

BTW, the band in red are SHITTY marchers. Their lines aren't nearly straight. What service is that??? It's disgraceful!!!!

3. Who in hell cares??? I just want to stop spending MY taxes on something
like this. What they do with his body is inmaterial, as long as it does not cost us money. But I guess it is too much to ask. We are paying for Bush*'s campaign. Aren't we blessed.

15. It won't happen for many years....
But there will be an outpouring of genuine grief & regret that we didn't know when we had it good.

Now go away!

20. I am not religious. I don't care what they do with dead bodies.
But now the Repugs have given us an argument to ask for a burial like this FOR ALL THE OLD FOSSIL presidents that will croak pretty soon (Ford, Bush Sr., Carter)... and of course a much younger, intelligent, and good looking one CLINTON. So Reagan is going to bankrupt us through death...AGAIN.

31. Actaully, we here at DU can handle the truth,
what many of us are offended by, is a flamebait thread.

It is not a question of who is/was the president, it is the Office of the presidency that deserves respect. For you to inject Clinton as a source of flamebait was un called for...There is your truth.

8. The news outlets have mentioned security concerns for the funeral
I'm not quite sure what they think might happen, maybe they are more concerned with keeping the idiot Bush safe than keeping the body safe. You know terrorists are everywhere!

32. Nope ...

The only thing that saved him from hell was his alzheimers. So he's being sent back to earth as Dubaya's guardian angel. But I think he'd rather go to hell.

24. he can become vapor, and materialize anywhere, at night
when nobody is looking, he is......immortal

but seriously, i never thought of that, and it would be pretty slick if they pulled it off. an empty casket. plus the few seconds i saw, there were men walking around with machine guns and dogs. why?

Yet one Marine easily slid it with him arms. Maybe the Kason was coated with Teflon.

I dunno?????

33. I wondered about that
from the minute that I heard the "viewing" in CA was going to be closed casket....seems like the cult of personality would have called for an open casket if possible. My personal paranoid fixation is what if he's actually been dead for months and they pulled him out of the hat so to speak since the news has been so uniformly bad for the Chimp-in-Chief. :tinfoilhat:

35. I don't want to be gross..
.. but.. umm.. wouldn't a body be less than fresh after a few days? Does it have a built in fridge? That sounds macabre, but I was wondering about the suitability of a 5 day lovefest like that.

36. If they embalmed him at the funeral home, he's pretty well
preserved for awhile. I just can't see all this pomp and circumstance with a closed casket. He must have been pretty gross looking at the end. I wouldn't be surprised if Nancy had him cremated and that there is an urn of ashes in a vault back at the library ready to be put into the casket at burial time.

37. That's what I'm thinking, too.
And I'm not sure I blame any of them. I remember my mother had a closed-casket service for my father, and none of us wanted to view him -- he'd died at home, with visiting hospice care, and she was absolutely right that such vanity as my father possessed would not have allowed him to want himself to be seen the way he looked by the time the cancer took him.

I'm sure Ronnie was a much more vain man than my father. My guess is that whether he's in the box or not, either he asked or Nancy decided that it wasn't a good idea for his corpse to be seen. For Pete's sake, he was 93 years old -- there are hardly any pictures of the guy I've seen since Clinton's first term. Vanity conquers everything else.
